'Exploited': Arsene Wenger makes point about Tottenham after calling for big change in football

Arsene Wenger has made a comment about Tottenham Hotspur after calling for a big change to the calendar in football.

Tottenham are currently battling it out for a place in the top four but the club has already made plans for the post-season.

Spurs are set to play Newcastle United in a friendly in Melbourne just three days after the Premier League season concludes.

It’s fair to say last month’s announcement came as a surprise, particularly with players from each side set to be involved in Euro 2024 this summer.

The likes of James Maddison, Anthony Gordon and Kieran Trippier are expected to head to the Euros with England. Organising a friendly just days after a gruelling campaign won’t exactly be ideal for those players.

Now, former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has pointed out Tottenham’s friendly with Newcastle while calling for a change to the calendar in football.

Wenger makes point about Tottenham

Speaking on beIN SPORTS, Wenger called for a change to the calendar in football as he claimed teams have started to ‘exploit’ gaps to generate more income.

“We have to think that for example, you have the Club World Cup in 2025 which starts in the 14th June, the 10th June you have the last international game,” Wenger said. “It finishes in 14th July and then you have to start early because of the World Cup. At some stage, you have to change the calendar.

“It is a question that I do not have all the answers but you can find solutions. What is happening is that today, if you have a free day, somebody organises a competition. I give you an example, Spain played the Super Cup with four teams in Saudi Arabia. It was a competition that was not absolutely needed but it is an income. It is two more games that are tough games.

“If you leave free dates in the calendar, somebody will organise a competition. I have seen that Tottenham go to Australia, three days after the season, against Newcastle.

“It means any free day is exploited for more income, so it’s better. And then on the other hand people want top level competitions and the club wanted the Club World Cup, the expanded one. Because today you have to create stronger clubs in the rest of the world, only in Europe you have strong clubs who can compete at the top, top level.”

When will Tottenham play Newcastle?

Tottenham are set to face Newcastle on Wednesday, May 22 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The friendly is scheduled for just three days after Spurs’ last game of the season away to Sheffield United.

It will see Ange Postecoglou return to Australia for a second time as Spurs boss after the club visited Perth during their pre-season tour last summer.
