Ex-Gerrard star hopes to return to Ibrox next season but he won’t be getting “carried away”

When Steven Gerrard gave Glenn Middleton his breakthrough at Rangers, the sky really did seem the limit.

Having just joined the club in a Graeme Murty-inspired switch for Norwich in January 2018, Gerrard quickly set about involving the then teenager when he took over in the summer.

In Stevie G’s first season Glenn Middleton played a very impressive 29 times for Rangers, scoring five goals and laying on five assists.

However, the winger wouldn’t play for the club again.

The direct, pacey young wide talent appeared destined for the top, but after falling out of favour, a variety of loan spells at Hibs, Bradford and St Johnstone heralded mixed results.

Now rebuilding in the Scottish Championship with Dundee United, Glenn Middleton is a player reborn and has eyes firmly fixed on a return to Ibrox next season.

Only this time the 24-year-old will be hoping to wear the tangerine of Dundee United.

Glenn Middleton stars for Dundee United

Once again starring for the Arabs at the weekend, Glenn Middleton netted his fifth goal of a productive season in the 4-1 demolition of Greenock Morton.

The performance was so good in fact that Glenn Middleton has just been named in the SPFL’s team of the week.

The winger has been a crucial part of Jim Goodwin’s promotion chasing side this season, adding 14 assists to the cause across a total of 41 games this season.

That result stretched Dundee United’s lead at the top of the Scottish Championship to six points and now the Tannadice club looked nailed on to bounce back to the Premiership at the first time of acting.

If Dundee United can hold their nerve in the run-in, it’ll be in no-small part down to ex-Rangers winger Glenn Middleton, who has been involved in every single one of their games this season.

The move to Dundee United – which Rangers signed off on in the summer of 2022 for an undisclosed fee – is now starting to bear fruit.

Ex-Rangers winger eyeing quickfire Ibrox return

As Dundee United’s promotion push gathers pace, Glenn Middleton has also been speaking about his ambitions this season.

The ex-Rangers winger could well be about to return to Ibrox next season and fans might well think the kid had a point or two to prove.

Having made the breakthrough at Ibrox, chances were soon at a premium and there’s an argument that it was too much, too soon for the talented youngster.

In the meantime, Glenn Middleton has assured the Courier that on-one at Dundee United is getting carried away this campaign.

“There has never been a danger of us getting carried away,” said Middleton.

“Throughout the season, even when we’ve had poor results, we’ve taken them on the chin. But there has never been an overreaction to a poor result OR a good result.

“No-one is getting ahead of themselves; you’re not having to pull anyone back and calm the mood. Long may that continue, until the job is finally done.”

Speaking about his time at Dundee United, Middleton added: “I’ve really enjoyed playing in this team this season. I love playing for the club, it means a lot.

“Hopefully, we can just carry on and get over the line, and achieve what we want to at the end of the season.”
