Report: Spurs want to sign £52m midfielder likened to Luka Modric, Ange Postecoglou thinks he'd be a perfect fit

The summer transfer window is on the horizon and Tottenham Hotspur may well look to make a number of signings in the off-season.

Although Spurs have improved since last season, recent heavy defeats to the likes of Fulham and Newcastle show there’s still a lot of work to do.

Tottenham were busy in both the summer window and the January window, and there’s a good chance they’ll be busy in the coming months too.

Now, a report has emerged claiming Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou has identified an exciting midfielder he’d like to bring to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

According to GiveMeSport, Spurs have set their sights on RB Leipzig ace and Spain international Dani Olmo.

The report claims that Postecoglou has identified Olmo as a ‘a creative influence who would fit seamlessly into his adaptable style of play and has the same intensity as (Postecoglou) demands, while there is still time before he reaches his peak.’

In terms of Tottenham making a move for the 25-year-old, GMS say Spurs could push for him if it becomes clear that they are not facing significant competition for his signature.

Should Olmo – who is said to have a £52million release clause this summer – join Tottenham, he would provide competition for James Maddison at No. 10.

What would Dani Olmo bring to Tottenham Hotspur?

Olmo began his journey at Espanyol before linking up with Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy back in 2007.

The reported Spurs target went on to join Dinamo Zagreb II in 2014 and became a first-teamer the following year, going on to make 124 appearances for the Croatian side.

Olmo’s heroics at Dinamo caught the eye of numerous top clubs, and in January 2020 he moved to RB Leipzig, where he continues to ply his trade.

The Spaniard has made 145 appearances for Leipzig, registering 29 goals and 34 assists. He also has 33 Spain caps to his name and eight goals.

In terms of Olmo’s style of play, the Bundesliga website has compared the reported Tottenham target to none other than Spurs icon Luka Modric.

‘Olmo is seen as one of the most talented players in Spain’s current crop of midfield maestros,’ they wrote in 2023.

‘Yet just like Real Madrid serial winner Modric, Olmo – who speaks fluent Croatian – was once a firm favourite at Dinamo Zagreb and he stands out for his superb technical ability.

‘Like Modric, Olmo’s close control is also mesmerising to watch, and makes him decidedly difficult to play against.

‘He couples that ability with his will to drive the ball at goal, be that when in possession or with threaded through-passes.

‘Added to his exceptional ability on the ball – on display with his second of the night in Leipzig’s recent Supercup win – Olmo also has a taste for a long-range strike at the target should space open up.’
