Report: Sources now explain why Cole Palmer left Manchester City for Chelsea

Cole Palmer leaving Manchester City for Chelsea has developed into one of the biggest talking points in football – let alone just the Premier League.

Many have questioned why Pep Guardiola allowed the England international to leave the Etihad Stadium for Stamford Bridge back in September.

Sam Allardyce said Manchester City “slipped up” when sanctioning the £42.5m deal, while Darren Bent thinks Chelsea robbed the treble winners by nabbing a “bargain” off them.

So, why did Manchester City sell Cole Palmer? Sources close to the situation have now shared their beliefs…

Why Cole Palmer left Manchester City for Chelsea

Well, a story from the Guardian has now shared a line from sources “with knowledge of the Palmer deal” between Chelsea and Manchester City.

It is said that the Citizens felt a need to sell the 21-year-old because Guardiola did not see him as being the correct profile for Manchester City’s structure.

Sources also told the Guardian that Palmer himself is a “free spirit” and needed to play outside the confines of a strict tactical order under the Spaniard.

By the sounds of it, the Wythenshawe-born forward wanted to be the main character, something he was certainly not going to become at Manchester City among the likes of Rodri, Kevin De Bruyne, Erling Haaland and Guardiola himself.

At Stamford Bridge, Todd Boehly’s project is very much in its infancy, where Palmer has been afforded the chance to take advantage of that and become Chelsea’s poster boy – something the American actually wants the Englishman to be.

Bargain

£42.5m for a player who had never scored a Premier League goal before this season seemed like a pricey deal for Chelsea last year.

However – despite a number of misses in the transfer market – the west Londoners are surely delighted with that investment right now, and stand to make a giant profit if Palmer does ever choose to leave.

The Chelsea No.20 is now being valued at €100m (£86m) by the CIES Football Observatory – which is simply a valuation.

In the context of the transfer market, and the fact Palmer is a young, English talent, Chelsea arguably have a £200m footballer on their hands if he keeps his current level of performance up.

Hopefully, the Chelsea talisman can do exactly that – and also fire England to some silverware at UEFA EURO 2024 this summer.
