Taylor Swift shouts out fellow musician who 'should be a bigger artist' on new album

Taylor Swift references Charlie Puth in The Tortured Poets Department lyrics and it has already inspired lots of hilarious memes.

The wait is finally over, and The Tortured Poets Department is here and bigger than we expected. Released on Friday, April 19th 2024, Taylor Swift unveiled a 31-track double album edition called The Anthology, offering listeners such a deep well of lyrics that they’ll be throwing down buckets for months. Social media is ablaze with fans scrambling to attribute song lyrics to figures from Tay’s past, but she doesn’t leave any room for ambiguity when shouting out Charlie Puth

The title track, which comes second on the album, gives special consideration to American singer-songwriter Charlie Puth:

“You smokеd then ate seven bars of chocolate
We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist
I scratch your head, you fall asleep
Like a tattooed golden retriever

It’s been heavily speculated that the song, along with numerous others on the album, is about The 1975 frontman Matty Healy, whom Taylor was romantically linked with for a few months in 2023 following her break up with long-time partner Joe Alwyn.

Although there’s no explicit confirmation it’s about Matty, Charlie’s name landed a direct reference—there are few higher honors in music right now than having Taylor argue you’re underrated.

The pair’s wholesomeness dates back further, however. Back in 2021, the We Don’t Talk Anymore singer covered Taylor’s Teardrops On My Guitar and called her a “genius”.

They later had an exchange on TikTok, where Charlie gave her a loving welcome to the platform. “I’ve lurked your account for ages!” Taylor replied. “Thanks for the welcome, piano prince.”

Taylor Swift fans serve up hilarious Charlie Puth memes

Swifties have grown a pretty great reputation when it comes to memes, and we’ve already seen a shower of great ones dissecting lyrics from The Tortured Poets Department.

What’s so great about the Charlie ones, on the other hand, is just how sweet and wholesome some are. And yes, Charlie and his publicist must be fist-pumping the air right now:
