Douglas Luiz says Man City have someone who is better than Fernandinho was

Douglas Luiz has suggested that one current Manchester City player is better than Fernandinho.

The Aston Villa midfielder was signed by City back in the 2017 summer transfer window but didn’t end up making a competitive appearance for Pep Guardiola’s side before he was sold to his current club in 2019.

Now though, the Brazilian has made a claim about two players who have played a key part in City’s success over recent years.

In a recent video shared on the Daily Mail Sport TikTok channel where he was doing a this-or-that player ranking challenge, Luiz was asked to pick who is better out of Fernandinho and Rodri.

In response, the Villa star picked Rodri.

Fernandinho spent nine years at the Manchester club between 2013 and 2022, making 383 appearances along the way, winning five Premier League titles in total.

Rodri join City during the 2019 summer transfer window in a deal worth £62m and has since gone on to make 249 appearances for the Blues across all competitions prior to their FA Cup semi-final clash against Chelsea.

Having spent three years with each other at the club, the two midfielders featured in 71 games together.

Fernandinho and Rodri have been key players for City

A few months before his City exit, Guardiola described Fernandinho as an “incredible” captain and someone who was just as important behind-the-scenes as he was on the pitch.

Since the Brazilian made his exit from the Manchester club, Rodri has become a vital player for Guardiola, starting 52 of the 56 games he featured in across their Treble-winning season.

Now that Luiz has picked the current City star over his fellow Brazilian, this shows how much of an impressive player he is and how much admiration he has from another one of the Premier League’s top midfielders.
