'Awful habit': Pundit says Liverpool stars must get so frustrated with what 24-year-old teammate keeps doing

Tony Cascarino has suggested that one Liverpool player must be so frustrating to his teammates because of one ‘terrible’ habit he has.

Liverpool have got a real point to prove in the final weeks of the season. Unfortunately, it is looking increasingly likely that Jurgen Klopp’s final year at Anfield may end only with a Carabao Cup victory.

Liverpool are playing catch up in the Premier League after their surprise loss to Crystal Palace last weekend.

While the Reds were poor against the Eagles, they still managed to create a raft of glorious chances to get themselves back into the game.

Tony Cascarino says Liverpool player has a ‘terrible’ habit

One of those who missed a brilliant opportunity was Darwin Nunez. Nunez somehow had an effort saved right on the edge of the six-yard box in the second-half.

Nunez continues to divide opinion, with some full of praise for how hard he works, and others extremely critical of how wasteful he can be in front of goal.

But it seems that there is another issue which the 24-year-old is yet to address.

Speaking on talkSPORT (broadcast on 21/4; 7:10), Tony Cascarino noted that some of the Liverpool players must grow tired of Nunez not timing his runs correctly.

“Liverpool’s style changed when they had Firmino, okay, because he fed everything, he set up Mane and Salah, he would drop in, picked the ball up, very rarely gave it away, great work-rate, but he never really stretched teams, with Salah and Mane stretched teams,” he said.

“Now they have got the centre-forwards stretching the team, and that’s Nunez. But Nunez has got this awful habit of being caught offside. It is a terrible thing. It is so frustrating for a team who are a team who are looking to get behind the opposition. He is quick enough to give players half a yard, he is quick enough to give defenders half a yard, but he gets caught way too often.”

Darwin Nunez is not far away from being world-class

The frustration surrounding Nunez often stems from the fact that it is clear just how good he could be.

He has scored 18 goals and contributed 13 assists in all competitions this season. And yet, it does not feel that he has been prolific enough.

Nunez is fifth in the Premier League for the worst performance against his non-penalty expected goals this season, according to FBRef.

And while Erling Haaland is one of the players performing worse than him, we have seen what Haaland can do when he is at his best.

Jamie Carragher is one of those to doubt whether Nunez will either be the finished article in front of goal.

It would certainly be a real shame if it did not all click for Nunez at some stage in the coming years.
