'I think...': Gareth Ainsworth drops relegation verdict ahead of Blackburn v Sheffield Wednesday

Blackburn Rovers host Sheffield Wednesday in the Sunday kick off in the Championship.

Sheffield Wednesday along with 7,000 travelling fans make their way to Ewood Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Owls started the day in 23rd place of the Championship table after three games unbeaten and back-to-back draws, with the last one being a 1-1 draw at home to Stoke City.

Birmingham City are the team in 21st.

They drew at Rotherham United on Saturday, missing a potentially golden chance to move out of the bottom three.

Throughout the campaign, the bottom three has barely changed between four teams; Rotherham, Wednesday, Huddersfield Town, and QPR.

Huddersfield and Sheffield Wednesday both started Sunday on 44 points.

Rotherham were relegated earlier in the month, whilst QPR are now in 19th and five points above the drop zone.

The R’s have pulled away, and Danny Rohl‘s Sheffield Wednesday were in similar form, but lost games at the wrong times.

Whenever the teams around Wednesday win, the Owls seem to lose.

Plymouth Argyle are in 20th and on 48 points, Stoke City are in 18th on 50 and Blackburn are in 17th on the same number.

Appearing on Sky Sports before the Blackburn Rovers vs Sheffield Wednesday game, former QPR boss Ainsworth gave his verdict on the Championship relegation battle.

He said:

“I think both of these teams [Blackburn and Wednesday] can survive. I really do. There’s some huge games; Huddersfield play Birmingham, Plymouth still not out the race yet, probably QPR are safe. From there downwards, it’s going to sort itself out. But we’ll know a lot more in 90 minutes.”

Sheffield Wednesday’s remaining fixtures

The game vs Blackburn is of course a very important one.

Wednesday have games against top six hopefuls West Brom and Sunderland left to play, with the game against the Baggies at Hillsborough

The final day trip to Sunderland could become the decider for Sheffield Wednesday.

The Black Cats have won just one of their last five now, losing 1-0 at home to Millwall in the Championship on Saturday.

So for Rohl and his players, a win over Blackburn Rovers certainly feels like a must.

And like Ainsworth says, Wednesday have shown this season that they do have enough firepower to beat the drop; it’s just a case of missing their opportunity to get out the drop zone when one comes their way.

They have another chance here at Ewood Park, with a win able to lift them up and out of the relegation zone with no other teams in action today.
