Jamie Carragher gives his immediate reaction after reading Nottingham Forest statement following Everton loss

Jamie Carragher has issued his verdict on the surprise statement from Nottingham Forest on social media following their defeat to Everton on Sunday.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side arguably had every right to feel aggrieved at Goodison Park following their 2-0 loss which leaves them in a vulnerable position in the Premier League table.

How exactly Ashley Young did not give away a penalty is anyone’s guess. The Everton veteran arguably committed three offences inside the penalty area throughout the game.

Certainly, what appeared to be the most obvious penalty shout came when Young blocked the ball with his arm. It was deemed to be in a natural position, despite the 38-year-old seemingly throwing his arm out.

But he also made clumsy challenges on both Gio Reyna and Callum Hudson-Odoi in either half.

It was surprising that Anthony Taylor did not point to the spot once. But that is nothing compared to the confusion surrounding Stuart Attwell’s decisions to not recommend that Taylor visit the pitch side monitor on any occasion.

Understandably, Forest were not happy at full-time. But their statement on X has seen the club themselves receive a lot of criticism.

And speaking on Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher suggested that it was a baffling statement from Forest to put out despite the decisions which went against them.

“It tells you where we are with the Premier League and the clubs. Stuart Attwell and Anthony Taylor have had a horrific day. Awful. And they should be rightly criticised for that. And that could have real implications for Nottingham Forest. I get the frustration,” he said.

“But that, what I’ve just read there on social media, that’s like a fan in a pub. That’s embarrassing from Nottingham Forest. I get the frustration. That rubbish about the VAR’s a Luton fan. You can’t involved in that. You’ve got to show a little bit of class if you’re a football club. And I get it, the frustration. The officials have had an awful day. Terrible. But you can’t get involved in that. Nonsense.”

Sympathy for Nuno’s side may evaporate after this reaction

You have to have sympathy for the Forest players and fans. On another day, the scoreline could have been so different. And they would have been the ones to secure a big three points.

They have had a number of big decisions go against them this season. And that display from the officials was a sickener to watch, even as a neutral.

But, as Carragher notes, that statement has done them no favours at all. They will be mocked for the way that they have gone about their criticism and complaints.

The Forest hierarchy will argue that they felt that they had little choice at this point.
