Man, 34, dies in avalanche in Poland's High Tatra Mountains

A tourist has died after being swept away by an avalanche in the Polish part of the High Tatra Mountains.

Police told the PAP news agency on Sunday that the victim was a 34-year-old man from Poland.

Relatives had alerted the mountain rescue service at midnight because the man had not returned from a hike he had undertaken alone.

The accident occurred in the Świnicka Kotlinka area, not far from the tourist town of Zakopane.

According to the TOPR mountain rescue service, the man had an avalanche detector with him and was therefore quickly found under 40 centimetres of snow. However, he was already dead when rescue workers freed him.

It has snowed heavily in the Tatras in recent days, but the avalanche risk was not considered to be very high, PAP reported.
