‘Amazing’: Danny Murphy explains why 21-year-old Aston Villa ace is ‘wonderful’ after Bournemouth display

Aston Villa capped off a memorable week in style against Bournemouth on Sunday afternoon, seeing BBC pundit Danny Murphy sing the praises of one of Unai Emery’s goalscorers.

After playing 120 minutes and enduring a dramatic penalty shootout in Lille on Thursday, Aston Villa were back in action just three days later to face Bournemouth in the Premier League.

Despite all of the fatigue in and around Unai Emery’s squad, the Villans dug deep to come from behind to beat the Cherries at Villa Park, winning 3-1 on a glorious afternoon for the hosts.

The victory saw the Midlands club extend their lead in fourth place to six points, with Spurs now having the pressure on them with two games in hand in the race for the top four.

Danny Murphy praises the influence of Morgan Rogers against Bournemouth

Speaking on BBC Match of the Day 2, pundit Danny Murphy waxed lyrical about Watkins, who went from goalscorer to creator against the Cherries, setting up two of Villa’s three goals on the day.

The Englishman took his goal contribution tally to 31 in the Premier League this season however, Murphy was quick to hand some credit to one of his teammates for his connection with Watkins in attack.

Rogers scored Villa’s first goal against Bournemouth in what was another impressive performance from the 21-year-old, who is really thriving playing in the number 10 role behind the Villa talisman.

When analysing the game on Match of the Day 2, Murphy pinpointed why he believes Rogers has adapted so well to life at Villa Park.

“The fact that Morgan Rogers is with him [Watkins], it’s amazing how many players who have been at Manchester City have this wonderful game awareness and game intelligence, ability to find space and look comfortable.”

The duo worked seamlessly well together going forward for the Villans, causing the visitors all kinds of trouble throughout the fixture with the understanding of each other’s playing styles.

Morgan Rogers was a brilliant signing for Aston Villa in January

As highlighted by Murphy, Rogers is an academy product of Manchester City, joining the likes of James McAtee, Cole Palmer and many others to find sanctuary elsewhere in the Premier League.

Monchi and Emery signed the 21-year-old for his performances at Middlesbrough in the Championship and now, the £8m jewel is showcasing all the skills he learned from being at City as a youngster.

Rogers is still a raw talent, however, his ability to read the game and build play is highly impressive, particularly considering that he had never played in the Premier League before moving to Villa.

For that reason, the signing could have been seen as a gamble in January, with Monchi and Emery now having the last laugh at acquiring a talent of his calibre at such a young age, as his recent performances prove why Villa nabbed him.
