Report: Diego Simeone now wants Atletico to sign Tottenham player who Ange Postecoglou thinks is ’fantastic’

Diego Simeone is reportedly keen for Atletico Madrid to sign a Tottenham Hotspur player this summer.

The summer transfer window is expected to be a busy one at Tottenham as Ange Postecoglou continues to build a squad in his image.

Spurs have made improvements on that front over the past couple of years following a difficult spell in the transfer market.

The north Londoners have wasted plenty of resources on deals which haven’t worked out, with club-record signing Tanguy Ndombele springing to mind.

But their recruitment of late has to be admired. The likes of Guglielmo Vicario, James Maddison and Micky van de Ven have all settled in quickly following their moves to Spurs last summer.

Tottenham have also managed to shift players who simply didn’t have a future under Postecoglou.

Eric Dier made a surprise switch to Bayern Munich in January after Davinson Sanchez and Harry Winks also departed last summer.

Yet, there is plenty of work to be done when it comes to outgoings, with the likes of Djed Spence, Sergio Reguilon, Japhet Tanganga and Ndombele all out on loan.

Postecoglou will also face some key decisions over his current squad this summer and a player who’s started just six games under the Aussie is attracting interest from Atletico Madrid.

Simeone wants Atletico to sign ‘fantastic’ Tottenham player

While Postecoglou has built a closely-knit squad during his short time in north London, not every player will be happy with their situation.

Giovani Lo Celso is reportedly eyeing a summer exit after he’s mainly been used as a backup option for Maddison this season.

And according to Tutto Juve, Simeone wants to offer Lo Celso a way out of Tottenham.

The Italian outlet claims the Argentine boss has already ‘expressed his admiration’ for his compatriot.

The report notes how Lo Celso’s future at Spurs is yet to be decided but Atletico could represent a tempting opportunity for him to return to Spain.

What Postecoglou has said about Giovani Lo Celso

Despite handing Lo Celso just six starts in the Premier League this term, Postecoglou is clearly a huge fan of the 28-year-old.

Ahead of Tottenham’s 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest earlier this month, the Aussie boss commented on the Argentine’s lack of minutes.

“It is not just him. There has been a few in that boat where they just haven’t had a real good run in terms of there has been injury disruptions and other times when he has been fit, other players have played in his position, but I still think Gio’s been good for us this year,” Postecoglou said.

“Through that middle patch when we had a lot of injuries, he really stood up for us and then got his own injury of course. He made a real impact against Luton at the weekend and it really helped us get over the line. Look, he’s a fantastic player, but with all these things you’ve got to keep the perspective that we’re at a big club, we’re going to have a big squad and if it is not Gio, it will be someone else that will play that role next year.

“No one will play every game. It doesn’t happen. It doesn’t happen at all the big clubs, so I am never really worried about the game-time players are playing. If they want more game-time, there are other clubs where they can do that and I’m looking at contribution. With someone like Gio, like I said he has contributed to us this year and that’s been the most important thing for me.”

Lo Celso stepped up in Maddison’s absence between November and January, netting twice and providing two assists in eight games.

The midfielder has since picked up a couple of muscle injuries and Maddison’s return has undoubtedly impacted his minutes.

You get the feeling that Lo Celso could be on the move this summer as he searches for more regular game time.

Atletico would represent a brilliant opportunity for him to join a Champions League club and it’s well-documented that Spurs are also looking for reinforcements in midfield.
