'Top player': Anthony Gordon now says 21-year-old Newcastle player is one of his best friends in football

Anthony Gordon is a key player on the pitch for Newcastle United, while he has built an important relationship off it.

The 23-year-old has been one of the Magpies’ standout players this season, and can more than hold his own up against the likes of Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes for the honour of being Newcastle United’s best player of the 2023/24 campaign.

It has been a breakthrough year for Anthony Gordon, who has proved he can be a difference maker in black and white. He recently said he wanted to become a player who Eddie Howe can trust and rely on, and he has done exactly that.

He has done that through his goals and assists, boasting 20 goal contributions in all competitions. And he has done it through his availability, with Gordon only missing two games all season – and they were both due to suspension.

Anthony Gordon has some great relationships at Newcastle United

The England international is a fan favourite at St James’ Park, and it looks like he has built up some great friendships in the North East since becoming a Newcastle United player.

Alexander Isak recently spoke about how much he loves playing alongside Gordon, while the winger appears to be close friends with Kieran Trippier. He was the first Toon player to find out when Gordon was included in the England squad last month.

But neither player has the honour of being dubbed Gordon’s best friend at Newcastle United.

Anthony Gordon names his best friend at Newcastle

Gordon has appeared on The Overlap podcast alongside Gary Neville, and was asked to name his best friend in football.

Neville: “Best friend in football?”

Gordon: “I’d say I’ve got three. Curtis Jones, Tommy Doyle, Elliot Anderson. Mixed bag there. Some club, some international.”

Newcastle’s number 10 then spoke in more depth about Elliot Anderson.

“He’s a top player,” he said.

“He is just as a young player finding his feet in the games. He’s been top in training for a while, but he’s just finding his feet.”

Elliot Anderson has a big chance at Newcastle right now

It is quite amusing to see Gordon refer to Anderson as a ‘young player’, when he is only two years older than the Toon academy graduate.

But Gordon has a lot more experience at senior level, with Anderson only now establishing himself as a first-team regular at St James’ Park.

The 21-year-old is set for an extended run in the Toon starting XI following Joe Willock’s injury. Anderson was outstanding in midfield alongside Bruno Guimaraes and Sean Longstaff in the win over Tottenham, and that is likely where he will remain for the rest of the campaign.

It is a great opportunity for Anderson, who is a ‘top’ player as Gordon says. Everyone at the club speaks extremely highly of Anderson, and it is exciting to see him prove why he is so highly rated.

And it is nice to hear that he has built up a strong friendship with Gordon over the past year, and hopefully that leads to them gelling on the pitch for Eddie Howe’s side.
