38-year-old ex-Sheffield Wednesday ace urged to return to Hillsborough this summer

A former Sheffield Wednesday veteran has been urged to return to Hillsborough this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday are just a couple of weeks away from finding out whether they will be playing Championship football next season.

The conclusion to the campaign is likely to be followed by intense contract negotiations, as the Owls look to extend the stays of many of their key players.

The likes of Barry Bannan, Josh Windass and Di’Shon Bernard will see their contracts expire at the end of the season, with Danny Rohl eager to wait until their Championship status is confirmed before they open fresh talks.

One man who has already confirmed he will be leaving Sheffield Wednesday regardless of the outcome is Nicky Weaver.

The Sheffield-born coach is set to step down as Head of Academy Goalkeeping after spending a total of 29 years with the club.

David Stockdale to Sheffield Wednesday (again)?

The Owls have already been told that his position will be very hard to fill given the impact he had on the team, but journalist Joe Crann has now suggested one former Wednesday goalkeeper could take his place.

David Stockdale joined Wednesday on a free transfer in 2022 and made 24 appearances as they were promoted to the Championship.

He was then released and went onto join York City as both their Head of Recruitment and a player, but has now left his role with immediate effect.

Stockdale then took to X to write: “Well….Anyone need a GK….”

Joe Crann responded quickly with: “Nicky Weaver is leaving at the end of the season, Stocko…”

The Owls should look into a potential return

David Stockdale had already begun to move away from a playing role at York City, though it is unclear what his next move is.

The 38-year-old has spent time all across the EFL and could be a welcome addition to Danny Rohl’s backroom staff, while he is already familiar with a lot of the players from his stint in Yorkshire.

It is definitely a move that both the club and Stockdale should consider, as it lines up perfectly for both parties.

He will need some goalkeepers to actually coach though, with James Beadle and Cameron Dawson both likely to leave at the end of the season.

Perhaps Stockdale could even act as a player-coach himself, though Wednesday will surely be desperate to bring in a couple of fresh faces in between the sticks this summer.
