'A big shout': John McGinn says 'outstanding' Aston Villa teammate had best game for the club on Sunday

John McGinn has suggested one Aston Villa player had his best game for the club against Bournemouth on Sunday.

Unai Emery’s side secured an invaluable three points to move six points clear of Tottenham Hotspur in the race for Champions League football.

After last week’s nightmare for English clubs in Europe, a fourth-place finish will be required to secure a berth in Europe’s elite competition for the 2024/25 campaign.

Villa still appear to be on course to complete what would be a remarkable achievement come the end of May.

Morgan Rogers, Leon Bailey and Moussa Diaby were on target against Andoni Iraola’s side, but McGinn has suggested another Aston Villa player had his best game for the club.

Speaking to The Express and Star, the Scot lauded Ollie Watkins’ display and suggested it was the best he’s seen from the Englishman in a claret and blue shirt.

“I thought the way we played was slightly different; we sat in a bit deeper, and the attacks were brilliant,” he explained.

“I thought it was Morgan Rogers’ best game in a Villa shirt. I would also go as far as saying it was Ollie Watkins’ as well which is a big shout.

“I thought he was outstanding. It’s a huge win, but we’re absolutely knackered, so we have a couple of days off to recharge the batteries – I’m going up the road to get a game of golf in.”

Watkins registered two assists against the Cherries in another commanding performance whilst leading the line for Villa.

Per FotMob, the Englishman amassed five shots on goal, created two big chances and 11 touches in the opposition box.

The 28-year-old continues to go from strength to strength under Emery’s stewardship, and the Spaniard deserves immense credit.

It’s essential to remember Watkins lacked composure and was sometimes erratic under Steven Gerrard. Now, he’s among Europe’s elite and one of the most well-rounded forwards on the planet.
