Ian Wright delivers instant verdict after Arsenal ruthlessly thrash Chelsea at the Emirates

Arsenal thrashed Chelsea 5-0 on Tuesday night to get their Premier League title hopes back on track.

The Gunners, fresh from their morale-boosting win over Wolves at the weekend, were hoping to make it two wins in a row against their west London rivals.

Mikel Arteta’s charges went on to absolutely demolish the Blues, with Kai Havertz scoring twice against his former club.

Ben White also registered a brace, both players netting after Leandro Trossard had opened the scoring in north London in the fourth minute.

Trossard grabbed his 10th of the season with a smart finish from a tight angle following a neat Declan Rice pass.

Although Chelsea threatened to get back into the game, Arsenal held on until the interval, after which they were quick out of the blocks.

White doubled Arsenal’s lead on 52 minutes following a corner after Rice’s shot had bounced into his path off Thomas Partey.

The third arrived just five minutes later as Havertz held off Marc Cucurella to score from a superb Martin Odegaard ball in behind.

Havertz added a fourth in the 65th minute, collecting Bukayo Saka’s pass and making the most of some slack Chelsea defending to dish out more misery to the opposition.

And then, White scored a superb – albeit somewhat fortuitous – fifth, his first-time volleyed cross getting the better of Djorje Petrovic in the Blues net.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright liked what he saw from the Gunners and was certainly pleased at the final whistle.

What did Ian Wright say about Arsenal win over Chelsea?

Wright told Premier League Productions: “I’m pleased in the ruthless nature in which Arsenal went and won this, because that’s what you should do at this stage of the season.

“Chelsea were missing their best player but they weren’t good enough in the end and Arsenal were able to sweep them.”

What a night it was for the Gunners, who fully rubber-stamped their title credentials in wake of a difficult week earlier this month.

After losing to Aston Villa and Bayern Munich, confidence dropped a little, but the solid win over Wolves followed by the hammering of Chelsea has got Arsenal bouncing again.

You couldn’t ask for a bigger confidence boost ahead of the north London derby, which takes place this Sunday at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
