Emery told ‘unique’ Aston Villa star is better than 22-year-old in one area, it could cause a problem

Aston Villa are on cloud nine due to the squad’s recent successes, however, Unai Emery may soon be presented with a problem, with one player now claimed to be better than an absent member of the Spaniard’s favoured XI.

Nothing will distract Unai Emery from focusing on the run-in to Aston Villa’s glorious 2023/24 campaign, with a Champions League finish and European silverware still on the line.

Last week, the Villans progressed into the semi-final of the Europa Conference League and took a significant leap in their bid to finish fourth, with just four games left to play in the Premier League.

In recent weeks, one Villa star has been in formidable form, presenting Emery with an indispensable energy in attack, seeing the Spaniard tweak his formation to accommodate his dazzling talent.

Of course, we are talking about Morgan Rogers, who since arriving from Middlesbrough in January has grown into this Villa side, growing more confident and more impressive by the week.

While there are few negatives to the 21-year-old’s rise to importance, the manager could be presented with an unexpected problem to solve in the summer, with the Englishman now claimed to be better than his positional rival, Jacob Ramsey.

Unai Emery told Morgan Rogers is better than Jacob Ramsey in one area

Ramsey has been electrifying for his boyhood club over the years, becoming an integral part of Emery’s squad last season as he contributed to 13 goals in the Premier League.

This campaign has been a nightmare for the 22-year-old, who has suffered a host of injury problems throughout the 2023/24 calendar, seeing him secure only eight starts in the league this term.

Now, Rogers has come in with a similar profile to the Bodymoor Heath star and has shone in his absence, with journalists Gregg Evans and Dan Bardell discussing their similarities on the 1874 podcast.

Commenting on Rogers’ recent form, Evans said:

“He’s in a really good position now, kicking on. He’s getting closer now to where Jacob Ramsey was when he was playing regularly for Villa.”

Bardell shared the view of The Athletic journalist, adding that he believes the former Championship sensation is better than Ramsey in one key area.

“He’s so unique because of his frame, that’s what he’s got over Ramsey. He can shield the ball well when he’s running, he’s got that power because of his frame.”

Unai Emery could have a selection headache in the future

No one expected Rogers to rise to prominence so quickly after making the switch from the Championship to the Premier League in January however, the 21-year-old has now given Emery a decision to make way ahead of schedule.

The £8m signing has shown that he can work tidily with Ollie Watkins, play on the wing, just off Watkins or just behind the Villa talisman, and is not afraid to drive the ball forward when in possession.

It’s remarkable considering that the former Manchester City academy star only came into Emery’s side due to Ramsey’s absence although, he’s now found himself in an undroppable position.

While it’s fantastic for Emery to have a clone of Ramsey with more physicality, the Spaniard could now be presented with a selection headache when the Villa favourite returns, with the duo both performing best in the same position.

If the boss can find a way to utilise both stars in the same XI, the Villans could be laughing although, based on other members of the attack, it would be more likely to see Emery field one or the other.

All eyes will be on how Rogers’ form holds up until the end of the campaign, with the Englishman proving every week to be an outstanding asset for Monchi to have acquired in January.
