Derby County now see unwanted Premier League record broken after latest Sheffield United loss

Derby County have now seen one of their unwanted Premier League records broken following Sheffield United’s latest loss against Manchester United.

Derby County are on the verge of returning to the Championship, only requiring a point against Carlisle United on Saturday to seal their destiny.

A party atmosphere is expected at Pride Park, with supporters anticipating their first promotion as a club since the 2006/07 season.

During that campaign, the Rams finished third in the second tier and earned promotion to the Premier League via the playoffs, defeating West Brom in the final thanks to a Stephen Pearson goal.

In the summer of 2007, supporters were excited about being back in the top flight for the first time since 2002 but what followed would soon turn their apprehension into anguish.

The Rams would set a host of unwanted records – including their infamous points tally of 11 – which continues to haunt them and has people questioning whether it will ever be broken.

Luckily, they can kiss goodbye to one of their records thanks to Sheffield United.

Sheffield United break unwanted Premier League record set by Derby County

Sheffield United travelled to Manchester United last night hoping to pull off an upset.

And despite teasing the idea by taking the lead twice in the match through Jayden Bogle and Ben Brereton-Diaz, would end up on the receiving end of a 4-2 defeat.

This was remarkably the seventh time the Blades have conceded at least four goals in a match and unfortunately for them, two of those occasions came against Burnley, losing 5-0 and 4-1.

Their latest shipping of four goals would prove to be the most fatal, as while it plunges them closer to the Championship, it also saw them break the Rams record of most goals conceded in a Premier League season (89), with Rasmus Hojlund’s 85th-minute strike the 92nd they’ve let in this season.

Although their 11-point tally remains intact, and probably will for years to come, Derby can take solace from United at least taking one of those unwanted records away from them.

Derby County dream of making amends for their 2007/08 season

Derby fans feel like they’ve got their club back under the ownership of David Clowes, with the Rams moving forward and making consistent progress.

Having finished seventh in his first campaign at the helm, Paul Warne‘s men are poised to finish second in League One and return to the Championship.

For the first time in years, the club can make an effort to build in the second tier without being hamstrung by problems off the pitch or points deductions.

If they do return to the second tier on Saturday, a season of consolidation will be on the cards and then, just maybe, the Rams can start dreaming of a return to the Premier League.

Having not returned since their relegation in 2008, they’d love to get back there and make amends for the worst campaign in top-flight history.
