'A joy to watch': David Prutton says 'very tough' 26-year-old has fixed problem Leeds had in the Premier League

Leeds United could not stop conceding goals in the Premier League but David Prutton believes one “very tough” player has fixed that problem this season.

The combination of Robin Koch and whoever was fit in the middle of the Elland Road defence last season could not plug the leak. Leeds conceded 78 goals in 38 Premier League games, more than anyone else.

It was a real problem and an area that Daniel Farke needed to address in the summer. He brought in Joe Rodon on loan from Tottenham and the Wales star has sparkled since his arrival.

The 26-year-old has clocked up 45 appearances while on loan after three difficult years since Tottenham bought him from Swansea. He has helped Leeds keep 19 clean sheets this season.

With two games left to play, Rodon will be crucial in the Yorkshire side’s late push for a place in the top two with QPR next on Friday.

David Prutton picked him in his Sky Sports Championship Team of the Year and had encouraging words for him.

Prutton picks Joe Rodon in his Team of the Year

Former Leeds midfielder Prutton picked Rodon in the middle of his defence alongside Leicester City’s Danish defender Jannik Vestergaard: “They combine many things do Joe Rodon and Jannik Vestergaard.

“Two players that you would be very wary of playing against, very tough. What Rodon has brought to a Leeds defence that was very leaky in the Premier League has been a joy to watch. Very tough pairing.”

Rodon has been sensational for Leeds. While the focus will be on the last two League games, those in the boardroom at Elland Road have got to be working on a deal that sees Rodon remain in the summer.

Rodon wants to stay at Leeds in the summer

TBR Football journalist Graeme Bailey exclusively told Leeds United News that Rodon wants to stay at Elland Road this summer and that he is very happy in a Leeds shirt. But you would imagine that promotion will be key to a deal.

Mainly because Rodon is likely to cost a fee north of £10m and if Leeds want to spend that much on a defender, than promotion is key. Especially, with parachute payments reduced to 40% in a second season.

Rodon has said himself he would like to play for Leeds alongside his Welsh mates in the Premier League. Focus then needs to be on the next two games but if Leeds get over the line, surely Rodon signs on.
