'Very, very lucky': Allardyce says 44-year-old Chelsea manager target would be fortunate to get top job now

Sam Allardyce has claimed that one Premier League manager would actually be very lucky to get a top job amid reports that Chelsea are interested in him should they look to replace Mauricio Pochettino.

It appears that there is a question mark over the future of Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea. It has been another disappointing season for the Blues, with the 5-0 loss to Arsenal on Tuesday reminding everyone of just how far they remain from the Premier League title race.

Some of the Chelsea players want Pochettino to stay, but it appears that there is a chance that a change could be made, with a number of names in the frame.

Sam Allardyce says Chelsea manager target would be very lucky to get top job

The Guardian reported last month that Chelsea are interested in Ruben Amorim and Roberto De Zerbi, who also has admirers at Liverpool and Manchester United.

De Zerbi has won a lot of plaudits for the job he has done at Brighton, carrying on the excellent work of Graham Potter on the south coast.

The Seagulls have however, been extremely inconsistent, winning two, drawing three and losing five of their last 10 games in all competitions.

Sam Allardyce was asked on No Tippy Tappy Football where he thinks De Zerbi will be next season amid speculation over his future, and it would appear that Allardyce is not entirely convinced that he is ready for that next step.

“Brighton,” he said.

“He’ll be very, very lucky if he gets one of the top jobs just yet, because he’s taken over at an outstanding football club. Graham Potter did an outstanding job, but the owner’s the best man, he’s structured that football club to be a massive success on a limited budget, makes huge amounts of money by finding players and selling them on, which finances the football club to be what it is, which helps the manager be as successful as he is. And he’s carried on where Graham Potter left off.

“What has improved is the number of goals they’ve scored now, they score more goals. Before they used to create as many chances as they create now, but for some reason, couldn’t put them in the back of the net.

“He’s getting good publicity and if he does get the opportunity to get a better job, he should take it and snatch their hands off as quick as he can because if he doesn’t take it now, he might never get the opportunity again while he’s held in high-esteem.”

Appointing Roberto De Zerbi would be another risk from Blues

It would be an interesting move if Chelsea did target De Zerbi in the summer, because it has been such a bizarre few years at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues did appoint Potter off the back of his time at the Amex Stadium, but that decision did not pay off with the Englishman sacked last season.

Pochettino meanwhile, has not been able to make the kind of progress the Chelsea hierarchy would have hoped for, so it would be absolutely imperative that they get the next appointment right when several managers have struggled.

De Zerbi is going to get that opportunity at a club higher up the table if he continues on this trajectory with Brighton, but clearly, Chelsea would naive to expect anyone to work miracles immediately.
