28-year-old dropped, Ben Tozer starts: Predicted Wrexham XI v Stockport - opinion

Wrexham host Stockport County in what promises to be an exciting season finale on Saturday lunchtime.

Phil Parkinson‘s Wrexham have smashed the business end of the season in style, winning six of their final seven matches in League Two, with their only defeat coming against the league’s most in-form side, Doncaster Rovers.

Hosting Stockport County on Saturday is an opportunity to see next season’s opponents close in action having watched the visitors wrap up the league title.

It’s also a chance to break a six-year record in League Two for goals scored at home, requiring three against Dave Challinors side to eclipse Luton Town’s total of 62 in the 2017/18 campaign.

Wrexham team news ahead of Stockport County clash

It promises to be an emotional afternoon for many associated with Wrexham.

Long-serving Ben Tozer and Luke Young have played vital roles in their rise from National League struggles to League One, but as they see their contracts expire in the summer, this could be their final game involved with the club.

Whether Parkinson plays both players for sentimental value remains to be seen, although Young was impressive in midfield against Crewe so he could keep his place.

As for news on the injury front, left-back Jacob Mendy is sidelined till pre-season while James Jones has been sidelined with a hamstring injury since February.

Jones is closing in on a return, though Parkinson admitted he won’t risk the 28-year-old for the final match.

Wrexham predicted XI v Stockport County

Everyone associated with Wrexham will be hoping this isn’t Arthur Okonkwo‘s final game for the club as Humphrey Ker has claimed he’s desperate to sign him permanently from Arsenal.

As for Parkinson’s back three, Eoghan O’Connell, Tom O’Connor and Max Cleworth have been indispensable as a trio, although Tozer could play one last time and start over O’Connell in the middle of defence.

Flanking them on either side will be Ryan Barnett, who was hailed as ‘terrifying’ for his pace, with James McClean flying down the opposite flank.

In what could be his final game for Wrexham, Young could start in the deep-lying midfield role alongside two guaranteed starters, Elliot Lee and Andy Cannon.

The latter two are in contention for the Player of the Year award, as is striker Paul Mullin, whose 24 goals in the league places him behind only Wrexham-linked Macaulay Langstaff.

Mullin has been exceptional throughout this campaign and against Crewe, supporters saw the best of his partnership with Ollie Palmer, who shouldn’t be dropped after scoring and assisting.
