'The next step': Sunderland manager target drops fresh hint on his future with message to chairman

A Sunderland manager target has just dropped a huge hint on his future.

Sunderland sacked Michael Beale in February, following a run of four wins from 12 games in charge.

There was a deject mood among supporters following hat was a very turbulent spell under the former Rangers and QPR boss.

And Mike Dodds has struggled to improve results, taking just two wins from 11, with three wins and the rest being defeats.

Last time out, the Black Cats were beaten 1-0 by Millwall at the Stadium of Light, with fans critical of Dodds after full-time.

Former Bayern Munich and German national team no.2 Rohl took his first job as a manager with Sheffield Wednesday back in October.

The Owls were rooted to the foot of the table when he arrived.

They were also winless after the opening 13 games of the season, but a 3-1 win at Blackburn Rovers last time out has lifted them into 21st place of the Championship table with two games to go.

Wednesday are now edging towards safety, though they can’t mathematically secure it until the final day of the season when they play Sunderland on Wearside.

Previous reports revealed that Rohl was on the shortlist at Sunderland, who also fancy Reims boss Will Still.

And speaking to the press on Thursday ahead of his side’s home game vs West Brom this weekend, Rohl was pressed on his future at the club.

He said:

“At first I think we should play the next two games. And then we are looking in the future. I think I see a lot of potential, especially with our massive fans… I see a team here who has a good mentality. But we have to do some things right in the summer. I think if we do this, and we have the chance to do it and I can change some things here in the summer, and we get the opportunity for this, then we can think about the next step for this club.”

Why Sunderland may miss out on Danny Rohl

Rohl’s message to Sheffield Wednesday has always been clear.

He wants the club to make changes off the pitch and show some ambition after several stalling years, and if they do that then it seems like Rohl is more than happy to stay.

He’s built a huge bond with the fans and he’s now got Sheffield Wednesday out of the bottom three, with Championship survival having long been the minimum requirement for Rohl to stay on.

And his latest comments suggest that Rohl is still keen on staying in S6, though the message to owner Dejphon Chansiri remains the same.

So for Sunderland, Rohl now looks increasingly likely to stay at Sheffield Wednesday, with the Owls looking increasingly likely to stay up.

He may only become available or want out of the club if changes aren’t made later in the summer, by which point Sunderland will surely have made a managerial appointment.

Right now then, unless Sheffield Wednesday get relegated, it looks like the Black Cats miss out on Rohl.
