'Over the line': Sky Sports pundit issues score prediction for Sheffield Wednesday vs West Brom

Sheffield Wednesday host West Brom in the Championship this weekend.

Sheffield Wednesday return to Hillsborough this weekend, after a successful away outing in Lancashire last Sunday.

The Owls won 3-1 at Blackburn Rovers, lifting themselves out of the bottom three for the first time under Danny Rohl.

But the job is far form done.

West Brom are chasing a top six finish and will want to avenge back-to-back defeats against a lowly Wednesday side this weekend.

In their club history, Sheffield Wednesday have beaten West Brom 59 times, losing 39, and drawing 28.

Last time these two met earlier in the season, Wednesday lost 1-0 at The Hawthorns, in what proved to be Xisco Munoz‘s final game as manager.

Wednesday haven’t beaten the Baggies in almost 20 years now, with their last win coming in 2007, and their last home win against West Brom in 2006.

West Brom have won the last four outings against Sheffield Wednesday, with the Owls scoring just once in those four.

And issuing his score prediction for the Championship clash between Sheffield Wednesday and West Brom, Sky Sports pundit and former Owls midfielder David Prutton said:

“I’ve been in a similar position with Wednesday, a very long time ago where, obviously it’s not the last day of the season, but pretty much there. A big crowd at Hillsborough, that was massive part of us beating Boro on the final day to secure safety, so this feels something similar. Huge result last weekend to pull them out the bottom three, massive. It needs to be something that is quite obviously, built on. And I think they do… I just think, momentum, confidence, and the overriding emotion that comes with what Wednesday have done, in this past week, carries them over the line.”

Prutton predicts a 1-0 win for the Owls.

A common theme emerging

Josh Windass’ goal against Blackburn, and the win in general, seems to be stemming a common theme with Sheffield Wednesday, particularly under Rohl.

That’s that Wednesday are a big-game team.

They live for the special occasions and this final home game of the season, in front of a sell-out crowd, is another big one.

It’s without doubt their biggest game of the season so far with a win just about able to lift them to safety, though with Birmingham City and Huddersfield Town playing each other on Saturday, Wednesday can’t mathematically secure their status until the final day.

And like Prutton says, in front of the Hillsborough faithful and in a game with so much meaning, Wednesday will put in a really stoic performance.

West Brom are a good team but they’ve faltered of late, and they really won’t want to be playing a tricky Sheffield Wednesday side right now.

Kick off is at 3pm on Saturday.
