Mark Warburton thinks one Hammer was to blame for West Ham's failure to beat Liverpool

One time West Ham United coach Mark Warburton was not impressed by one player’s performance against Liverpool this afternoon.

Mark Warburton was a coach at West Ham before leaving the London Stadium in June 2023, and he had his say on his former side’s clash with Liverpool today.

The Hammers took the lead against the Reds through a Jarrod Bowen goal in the first-half. However, Jurgen Klopp’s side came roaring back in the second-half and took the lead after an Andy Robertson strike followed by an own goal.

However, Michail Antonio got us back in the game with a brilliant header with around 15 minutes left to play.

The game ended 2-2 and it now feels like our push for the European places is over.

Liverpool weren’t at the races this afternoon, it’s as simple as that, and that was an opportunity missed for us as far as I’m concerned.

Warburton believes one West Ham man was to blame for our failure to beat Liverpool today…

Mark Warburton criticises one West Ham player after Liverpool clash

The ex-Hammers coach was on punditry duty for the BBC today.

The game was a topsy turvy one this afternoon. On paper, a point against Liverpool is always a good result. However, given the current circumstances, we really needed to win the match.

And he clearly wasn’t impressed one little bit by one of his former players.

Mark Warburton was critical of Alphonse Areola when speaking to BBC Sport, after the Frenchman failed to stop Andy Robertson’s equaliser for Liverpool:

“It’s clear there is a demand to up the intensity from Liverpool, but for me it went in too easily past Alphonse Areola.”

He’s right in my opinion. Areola definitely should have saved the shot from Robertson.

It wasn’t as if the strike had any venom behind it, and his view wasn’t blocked either. It was a really poor moment from the Frenchman.

Usually, Areola is one of the very best shot-stoppers around.

Who knows what might have happened today, had the West Ham stopper saved the Liverpool left-back’s shot.
