'More from him to come': Phil Parkinson is really excited about Wrexham talent after beating Stockport County

Wrexham have ended the season on a real high, beating League Two champions Stockport County 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Well, there we go; another Wrexham season is in the books and it’s another story of success in the Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds era.

Just a year since celebrating promotion from the National League to League Two, Wrexham are in party mode again.

Promotion to League One was secured earlier in April but Wrexham have pressed on to finish the season in style.

After hammering Crewe Alexandra last weekend, Wrexham secured another victory by beating Stockport County on Saturday.

Connor Lemonheigh-Evans put the Hatters in front but Wrexham roared back after the break with Ollie Palmer levelling it up.

Former Stockport midfielder Andy Cannon won it for Wrexham, smashing home to send the STōK Cae Ras wild.

Phil Parkinson hails Max Cleworth

Cannon’s winner came after neat interplay down the right flank.

Defender Max Cleworth drove forward to support the attack, taking up a wide role to then pick out Cannon for the goal.

We often see wide centre backs going forward to make an impact in the final third, especially when playing in a back three.

That is exactly how Wrexham set up and Cleworth is showing the potential to become a quality right-sided centre back.

Boss Phil Parkinson was certainly impressed, telling Wrexham’s official YouTube channel that the goal was a ‘great move’ thanks to Cleworth’s influence.

Parkinson added that he is encouraging Cleworth to make those attacking runs more often, believing that there is more to come from him in that regard.

“What a fantastic moment for everybody when Andy Cannon has finished off in great style,” said Parkinson. “It was a great move, Maxi’s joined in and created that overload on the right hand side, something we encourage him to do and I still think there’s more from him to come, because he’s so good in forward areas,” he added.

Cleworth is Wrexham’s most exciting talent

Wrexham have understandably focused on signing immediate impact players in the McElhenney and Reynolds era.

Experienced performers who have proven themselves in League One and League Two – sometimes even higher – have been brought to wRexham to accelerate through the leagues.

Resale value doesn’t appear to have been a key focus for Wrexham in recent times but Cleworth is one talent who could make the club a lot of money down the line.

Of course, we don’t want to see Cleworth leave any time soon, but his development on the right side of Wrexham’s back three will make him very, very valuable.

Cleworth is only 21 and just seems to go from strength to strength and clubs higher up in the pyramid are surely paying attention.

The defender is certainly Wrexham’s most exciting talent right now and we can only hope that we see him continue his development at Wrexham for a while yet.
