James McClean uses just one word to describe Ollie Palmer after Wrexham victory over Stockport County

Wrexham ended the League Two season in style, beating League Two champions Stockport County 2-1 at the STōK Cae Ras.

We could have forgiven Wrexham players for being on the beach after securing promotion with a 6-0 win over Forest Green Rovers earlier in April.

The job was done, Wrexham were up and the final two games were meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

Phil Parkinson and co haven’t let up though, beating Crewe Alexandra 3-0 before picking up a 2-1 win against Stockport County.

The League Two champions did take the lead through Connor Lemonheigh-Evans, but Ollie Palmer’s leveller brought Wrexham back into the game.

Andy Cannon – formerly of Stockport – then went and won it, firing across the goalkeeper to secure all three points.

Wrexham’s stay in League Two is over after just a year and fans can already look forward to life in League One next season.

James McClean on Ollie Palmer

Wrexham’s fightback against Stockport was inspired by Palmer’s equaliser.

Parkinson needed his players to hit back quickly after the break having gone into half time 1-0 down.

Wrexham certainly did that as one long ball from Eoghan O’Connell beat the Stockport back line and Palmer was all on his own in front of goal.

Palmer fired home and Wrexham built from there, eventually securing the victory thanks to Cannon’s winner.

Palmer took to Instagram to celebrate a ‘good end to a great season’ whilst praising his teammates and the Wrexham supporters.

Wrexham teammate James McClean replied with just one word, branding Palmer ‘majestic’ after his equaliser.

That is a verdict many Wrexham fans will share with Palmer becoming a popular character during his time at the STōK Cae Ras.

Can Palmer make the step up to League One?

The question Parkinson and co must now ask is just how many of the Wrexham squad can now make the step up.

League One will be much tougher than League Two and some players will have points to prove.

Palmer could be one of them having only played 18 months of League One football across his career.

The giant striker joined AFC Wimbledon in 2020 and scored 10 times in 41 League One games before leaving for Wrexham in January 2022.

Palmer is now back in League One again and will be looking to prove that he belongs there.

It’s unclear just how big of a role the 32-year-old will have next season; much will depend on signings and managing Palmer’s workload.

Palmer’s partnership with Paul Mullin is just impossible to ignore though and we can still see him being a go-to man next season.
