Report: How Pep Guardiola has influenced incoming Liverpool manager Arne Slot

Some behind-the-scenes details have emerged regarding the influence Pep Guardiola has had on Arne Slot.

The Dutchman is set to take the reins at Liverpool once Jurgen Klopp leaves his role at the end of the season.

Now though, some details have come to light about how Slot views Guardiola and what managerial factors he has taken from the Manchester City boss.

A recent report from The Athletic had this to say on the matter.

It said: “As for the football, Slot does not disguise that he admires Pep Guardiola.

“There are traits that mirror much of what we have seen from Manchester City under the Spaniard, particularly the ferocious pressing to recover the ball and possession-based build-up.

“In one of his first team meetings at Feyenoord after joining in summer 2021, he told his players that the Champions League final between Chelsea and Manchester City a few weeks earlier produced so few chances (a combined three shots on target) because of the defensive work applied by forwards on both teams.”

What can Pep Guardiola and City expect to see from Arne Slot’s Liverpool?

With 145 games under his belt as Feyenoord’s manager, the 45-year-old has won 94, drawn 27 and lost 24.

In terms of City’s being defensive from the front, although they have made the fewest number of successful tackles (278) in the Premier League this season, 95 of them have been made in the attacking third of the pitch (95), leaving only six other sides with more in that area.

Interestingly, Feyenoord have made more tackles in the attacking third of the pitch (93) than any other side in the Eredivisie this season.

This shows how important it is for Slot in terms of his attacking players being the first line of defence when it comes to winning the ball back.

Looking ahead to the next Premier League season, it’s clear what City and the rest of the top flight can expect from Liverpool and Slot.
