'The truth is': Inter Miami star says he could now reject chance to play with Lionel Messi and Argentina

An Inter Miami star has hinted that he could reject the chance to partner Lionel Messi at international level by opting against playing for Argentina.

The 36-year-old attacker is still going strong for his country having won the 2022 FIFA World Cup with Argentina in Qatar, with Messi expected to take part in his final international tournament this summer in the Copa America.

With the competition taking place in the United States, it would be a fitting way for Messi to call time on his international career, with Argentina already the pre-tournament favorites, with La Albiceleste the current holders of the South American championship.

Yet an Inter Miami player has now hinted that he could choose not to play with Messi for Argentina.

Benjamin Cremaschi hints will choose USA over Argentina

Speaking to Urbana Play, 19-year-old midfielder Benjamin Cremaschi said he is leaning towards declaring for the United States for his international allegiance, with the midfielder already playing for Gregg Berhalter’s side last year.

With Argentina believed to be interested in naming Cremaschi in Javier Macherano’s Olympic squad later this year, the teenager has a big decision to make in the coming weeks, though it appears a choice has already been made.

Cremaschi said when asked about his international future: “I haven’t spoken to Scaloni, I spoke with Mascherano, the truth is he was very honest with me. He said he wanted the best for me. It wasn’t an egotistical conversation and I’m very thankful for it.”

When asked if he would consider an Argentina call-up, Cremaschi said: “Yes, but Mascherano said things very cleary. He told it to me in the best way and I understood him perfectly, so I’m leaning toward the United States.”

Inter Miami will want Cremaschi to pick the USA despite Messi connection

Whilst the prospect of playing for Argentina in Messi’s final days with on the international stage is one that many players will dream about, for Cremaschi, the midfielder needs to think more long-term.

The midfielder is already with Messi every day in training, and whilst Cremaschi could one day make it for a nation as big as Argentina, the United States presents a more realistic pathway to success for the youngster.

Moreover, for Inter Miami, they will be eager for their biggest and best prospects to play for the USMNT, with Cremaschi representing the Stars and Stripes a clear indicator that the Herons’ youth academy is producing exciting talents.
