Report: Chelsea have discussed the possibility of signing £100m Man City player this summer

Chelsea have internally discussed the possibility of signing a £100m Manchester City player this summer.

Since Todd Boehly‘s takeover in 2022, The Blues have spent an eye-watering amount of money, around £925m to be exact.

Though, despite their heavy spending, it’s had little impact on the pitch as they reside in ninth, well adrift of the top six.

Many of their expensive recruits have either failed or have only made an impact in patches without any real consistency.

£89m signing Mhykhailo Mudryk is the prime example of that and it seems the club are looking to replace him on the left.

According to Simon Phillips, Chelsea chiefs have internally discussed the possibility of signing Manchester City winger Jack Grealish this summer.

Grealish joined The Citizens in 2021 for a British transfer record fee, at the time, worth a whopping £100m.

The former Villa playmaker has endured a topsy-turvy time at the Etihad and his statistics don’t make for particularly good reading.

The 28-year-old wide player has scored just 14 goals whilst laying on 18 assists across 114 appearances, which hardly justifies the money City outlaid on him.

Admittedly, football is a lot more than just numbers but this seems a deal Chelsea should steer well clear of, particularly given the fee they’d be required to pay.

They just invest in a different strategy, instead.

Chelsea should focus on developing their academy players

Chelsea have tried and tested the big-name route before and with varying degrees of success, in truth.

The West Londoners should really place an emphasis on giving their young talent a platform to express themselves, rather than bringing in multi-million-pound signings and stunting their development.

Reece James and Conor Gallagher are shining examples of what giving youth a chance can look like and Mason Mount is another notable case from the past.

In fact, Chelsea have currently got a 20-year-old winger out on loan who is tearing it up at his high-flying side, so why not offer him the opportunity?

Evidently, a change is needed in the club’s recruitment strategy.
