Report: Eddie Howe personally does not want £20m Newcastle player to be sold this summer

Newcastle United need to move some players on this summer, which means Eddie Howe might have to make some tough decisions.

While the club are not necessarily under pressure to cash in on a megastar like Bruno Guimaraes or Alexander Isak, it would be beneficial to make some money on a couple of Newcastle United squad players.

It has been reported that Miguel Almiron is likely to leave St James’ Park this summer, while Martin Dubravka could also see his Newcastle United career come to an end.

But the future is less certain for Callum Wilson.

Callum Wilson’s Newcastle United future is up in the air

The Magpies’ number nine was linked with a move away from Tyneside during the January transfer window, but ended up staying at St James’ Park.

Since then, there have still been suggestions that a Toon departure could be on the horizon for Wilson. After all, he is 32-years-old and about to head into the final year on his contract.

When you combine his age with the fact his deal runs out in 2025, it would suggest that now is the last time Newcastle can really get some decent money for a player who cost £20million four years ago.

But Eddie Howe has warned that replacing a player like Wilson could be very expensive, and a new report from the Athletic has shared details on how the Newcastle manager really feels about selling the England international.

How Eddie Howe feels about keeping Callum Wilson at Newcastle

According to the Athletic, Eddie Howe would prefer it if Newcastle United did not sell Wilson this summer.

That is understandable, given the quality he has. We saw that last week, as Wilson came off the bench to score in a 5-1 win over Sheffield United. It was a wonderful finish too, although Wilson believes he should have scored another!

The goal means Wilson now has nine in all competitions this season, and he will be keen to hit double figures in our remaining four games. It is an important end to the season for him, and he is very much fighting for his future.

It is a difficult one for Newcastle, as Wilson is such a good goalscorer. When he is fit, you can count on him to hit the back of the net. But injuries are the issue, while now really is the right time to cash in from a business perspective.

But the cost of getting a replacement has to be considered too, as a young player who could fill Wilson’s boots will not come cheap.

It is a really tough decision that Newcastle United need to make, and one I do not envy them for.
