'I doubt': Eddie Howe confirms £3m Newcastle star will not play against Burnley tomorrow

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has provided an injury update on Fabian Schar ahead of the game against Burnley this weekend.

The Magpies are going in search of what would be a vital victory, as they continue to challenge for a place in Europe. They are aiming to finish in the top six, which will either deliver Europa League or Europa League Conference football next season.

Burnley will be tough opponents given their recent resurgence, while Newcastle United’s injury crisis continues to cause problems – like it has all season.

Newcastle defender suffered a hamstring injury last week

Fabian Schar was the latest player to succumb to injury, being forced off during the 5-1 win over Sheffield United last weekend.

The 32-year-old came off at half time, although it initially looked like he would have to be withdrawn much earlier.

After 45 minutes, Schar’s afternoon was over. He could not play on due to a hamstring injury, with the defender unable to sprint. He was replaced by Emil Krafth, who did well in his place.

There has since been concern regarding Schar’s condition, with the Switzerland international not spotted in Toon training ahead of Saturday’s game against Burnley.

Eddie Howe provides update on Fabian Schar ahead of Burnley

Now Eddie Howe has provided an update on Schar, having spoke to the media ahead of the match at Turf Moor.

“Fabian will miss a period of time with a minor hamstring problem,” he said.

“He won’t be available tomorrow and I doubt we’ll see him again this season.”

Another season-ending injury for Newcastle United

Schar has joined the long list of players who will not feature again for Newcastle United this season.

We are already without Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles, and they were recently joined by midfield duo Joe Willock and Lewis Miley.

Then came news that Matt Targett might not play again, and now Schar’s campaign is over as well.

It is a massive blow to lose the £3million man, as he has been an ever-present for the Magpies in the Premier League. He has enjoyed another impressive season, and it is sad to see it end early.

Who could replace Fabian Schar for Newcastle’s final four games

Emil Krafth is likely to take his place in the starting XI, with Newcastle not boasting many alternatives in reserve.

Alex Murphy and Paul Dummett can also play at centre-back, but Howe may be reluctant to use another left-footer alongside Dan Burn.
