Taylor Swift drops hint Tortured Poets Department is linked to another album

Taylor Swift has offered a pretty huge hunt that Tortured Poets Department is subtly linked to one of her previous albums.

If she’s dropping, you can damn well trust that Taylor Swift will have the most discussed album of the year. The Tortured Poets Department has only been out for a couple of weeks but the levels of discourse and fan theories that have emerged have been unprecedented—even for her. From scrambling to decipher which songs are about The 1975’s Matty Healy to decoding somewhat ambiguous lyrics about people name-checked by their first only, there’s just so much to talk about. Yet, there’s one music fan theory that Taylor’s given an unexpected nod of approval, so to speak…

Taylor Swift reacts to Tortured Poets Department and Midnights fan theory

The Tortured Poets Department may be the toast of the town right now, but that’s not to mean her previous album Midnights doesn’t remain crystal clear in the memory of fans everywhere.

Certified Swiftie Patty Eminger recently shared a compelling fan theory on Instagram, suggesting that the opening lyrics on The Tortured Poets Department’s opening track Fortniight (feat. Post Malone) directly follow up the closing lyrics on Hits Different, the concluding song on Midnights (The Til Dawn Edition).

“The first lyric from the first song on the album ‘Fortnight’ reflects the last song on Midnights,” he argued. Hits Different leaves listeners with the lyrics: “Is that your key in the door / Is it OK? / Is it you? / Or have they come to take me away?”

Fast forward to Taylor’s return with Fortnight and she begins the song: “I was supposed to be sent away / But they forgot to come and get me.”

Not only is the theory too convincing for fans to shake it off, but Taylor has perhaps all but confirmed it by actually liking Patty’s post, gifting it an unofficial co-sign of sorts.

Fans can’t get over Taylor liking the fan theory post

Patty captioned the post assuring his followers that he loves the album, but the comments are all about holding him up.

“Taylor Swift liked this,” one fan reacted in celebration. “You made it.”

Another reacted: “If Taylor Swift liking this doesn’t validate you, I don’t know what will… you got the trophy for pointing this out!”

Amidst the reactions that congratulate Patty for commanding Taylor’s attention and approval, others have been sure to pat him on the back for his reading of the record. “Thank God someone finally understands the vibe of this album lol,” somebody commented. “She is literally using the most unhinged side of her to describe how it went downhill after the breakup.”

Not only that but other fan theories have been pitched in the comments which are just as fascinating to contemplate. “Midnights is a record of 13 sleepless nights throughout her life,” one explained, “and TTPD starts with Fortnight, which is the 14th.”

The album, and its fans, are gifts that keep on giving.
