Confirmed: Rangers Academy kid could be relegated on debut as shock exit pushed through

Rangers Academy goalkeeper Kieran Wright has waited his entire career to make the breakthrough in the Scottish Premiership.

The talented Ibrox stopper is highly-rated in Glasgow but faces stiff competition to make the grade at his boyhood club.

Jack Butland is the bonafide number one, and with Robby McCrorie backing the England hopeful up, chances are surely at a premium for Kieran Wright at Rangers.

But after an emergency seven-day loan move to Livingston was sanctioned by the authorities, the Lions’ clash with Motherwell could represent a whirlwind debut for the kid.

With Livingston teetering on the brink, the first time 25-year-old Wright pulls on the gloves in a top tier Scottish Premiership match the team he’s playing for could be relegated.

Wright moves to Livingston

Rangers have confirmed that Kieran Wright will move to Livingston for a week amid a goalkeeping injury crisis at the Tony Macaroni.

The moves comes with Hearts loanee Michael McGovern returning to the Jambos and a fresh injury to back-up stopper Jack Hamilton.

Whilst Shamal George is expected to start for Livingston against Motherwell, Kieran Wright goes straight into the matchday squad for the clash with the Steelmen at Fir Park.

Livingston have gone on record to thank Rangers Director of Football Operations Creag Robertson for his role in completing the deal.

“The club would like to thank the SPFL, the SFA and Rangers FC Director of Football Operations Creag Robertson for their help in making this possible,” reads a Livi statement.

Rangers kid could be relegated on Premiership debut

In a quite remarkable turn of events, Kieran Wright could now make his Premiership debut as Livingston are relegated from the Scottish top flight.

Davie Martindale’s side are nine points adrift at the bottom of the Scottish Premiership with only four games left to play.

This means defeat to Motherwell would all but consign the club to the second tier.

But should Ross County – who host Hibs in Dingwall – avoid defeat this weekend then Livingston’s six year stint in the top flight will officially come to an end in the event of defeat to Motherwell.

Should Livingston draw with Motherwell, and Ross County defeat Hibs, only a St Johnstone defeat away to Aberdeen would see the Lions retain top flight status this weekend, albeit on goal difference.

It’s an interesting scenario for Wright, who is a Scottish youth international capped to U21 level and has enjoyed loan spells in the Scottish lower tiers with Albion Rovers, Raith Rovers, Alloa Athletic, Partick Thistle and Dumbarton.

Rangers fans will also remember fellow Academy graduate Robby McCrorie spending a 18 months on loan with Livingston between January 2020 and the summer of 2021.
