Sunderland must try and sign 'unplayable' EFL whizz who has 20 goal contributions this season - opinion

Here, TBR take a look at an exciting EFL talent who Sunderland should look to add to their ranks this summer transfer window.

Sunderland have endured a pretty underwhelming season by all accounts, particularly after a top-six finish last term.

Replacing Tony Mowbray with Michael Beale didn’t work out and they’ve been in limbo since then under Mike Dodds’ stewardship.

Though, the future looks bright at the Stadium of Light as links to former Reims manager WIll Still continue to intensify.

That said, they will need to make additions in the fast-approaching window and here is one player they should try to sign.

Sunderland should try to sign Kwame Poku

Kwame Poku has set League One alight this term and has produced a phenomenal 20-goal contribution haul for Peterborough United this season.

The left-footed wide player, who has been capped by Ghana, has looked a level above the third tier in truth and there is little doubt he’d be able to ply his trade at Championship level.

With Posh currently battling it out in the playoffs, any forthcoming deal may depend on what division they end up in, but Poku is certainly a player Sunderland chiefs should be keeping tabs on.

The ‘unplayable’ EFL whizz can operate on both flanks but he primarily plays on the right, which would add great balance to The Black Cats.

If Jack Clarke remains, he’ll need much of the load to be taken off his shoulders, as they’ve become over-reliant on his output.

So Poku could be the perfect addition and one that’d be attainable for a reasonable fee.

The cost of Kwame Poku

So, how much would Peterborough demand for Poku?

Well, Posh sanctioned the sale of Ephron Mason-Clark to Coventry City during the Janaury transfer window for a fee believed to be worth in excess of £5m.

So that may be the benchmark for Poku, who aged 22, is a couple of years younger than United’s talisman.

Further, Poku has a number of suitors eyeing a move for him, which will only drive the price tag up.

According to TEAMtalk, Ipswich Town, West Bromwich Albion, Millwall, Bristol City and Stoke are all monitoring him, along with Sunderland.

So competition is rife for Posh’s maverick.
