Sean Dyche now has to drop £20m Everton player, he had fewer touches than Pickford vs Luton - opinion

Whilst a draw on the road against a side fighting for their lives marked a solid result for Everton, it was still a great chance wasted for them to claim another victory.

Having won all of their last three matches at home, beating Nottingham Forest, Liverpool and Brentford to secure their Premier League status, their form has arguably never been so good.

And with the pressure off, confidence should have been flowing.

But despite being gift-wrapped an opening goal, Sean Dyche’s men could not capitalise, and in the end were forced to settle for a point.

It did not help that they were hindered by one attacking asset who once again disappointed.

Abdoulaye Doucoure has been poor for weeks

With Dominic Calvert-Lewin returning to goalscoring form with four in his last five, and Idrissa Gana Gueye even contributing a couple in crucial recent matches, Abdoulaye Doucoure’s lack of input has been made even more startling.

The Mali international was once Dyche’s focal point, as a hard-working attacking midfielder who provided a link between the tireless holding pairing and the front three.

During that spell, he was actually one of the Premier League’s most proficient midfielders and widely regarded as Everton’s most important players.

However, this current spell has been worse than any could have possibly imagined during that period, having failed to score in his last 14 league matches.

Were he to be offering elsewhere that might be forgiven, but his link-up play has completely deserted him too, and at present, he is nothing but a pair of legs.

This was no better exemplified than given that against Luton Town even goalkeeper Jordan Pickford enjoyed more touches of the ball (28) than Doucoure did (63).

Everton cannot afford any passengers

Whilst they got away with a draw despite enduring this particular passenger, this is not something that Everton can afford in the long term.

For so many years now they have endured a squad laden with passive players willing to pass on the blame and not take accountability.

Stars like Demarai Gray, Anthony Gordon and Bernard, whilst clearly talented, were far too inconsistent to make the Toffees a true force whilst they were around the club.

Now, despite players like Dwight McNeil and Jack Harrison being far less flashy, their effort levels never waver.

These are the kinds of players that Dyche needs to succeed, but if Doucoure’s technical form does not return soon, serious questions must be asked of the £20m star.
