Report: PL midfielder who Sheffield Wednesday wanted last summer and in January now tipped for summer exit

A Sheffield Wednesday target from the 2023/24 season has now been tipped to leave his current club this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday are already pressing on with their summer transfer plans, after securing their Championship safety with a 2-0 win vs Sunderland on the final day of the season.

The Owls are keen on re-signing James Beadle on loan from Brighton whilst further reports have revealed that the club are desperate to re-sign Ian Poveda as well, with the Colombian out of contract at Leeds United.

The pair joined in January in what proved to be a very fruitful transfer window for Sheffield Wednesday.

And another name linked in January, as well as last summer too, was Newcastle United midfielder Isaac Hayden.

The 29-year-old was wanted by Xisco Munoz last summer but he eventually signed for Standard Liege on loan, before returning to England in January and signing for QPR on loan, despite Sheffield Wednesday’s interest.

Now back at Newcastle United, he’s been tipped to leave the club once again this summer.

Isaac Hayden Newcastle United future unclear

Hayden became a favourite among QPR supporters following his impressive loan spell which helped keep the R’s in the Championship.

He featured 17 times in the Championship, featuring in every game possible following his loan move from Newcastle United in January.

Now back at St James’ Park, he’s got two years left on his contract, and an emerging report from The Shields Gazette says that Hayden is ‘expected to leave the club’ this summer, ‘whether on a temporary or permanent basis’.

Could Sheffield Wednesday sign Isaac Hayden this summer

Having been linked with Hayden in two successive transfer windows, the last one being under Danny Rohl and head of recruitment Kevin Beadell, it suggests that Hayden is someone who the Owls really like.

And it’s easy to see why; he provided some real steel in the midfield for QPR, averaging 1.2 clearances per game, 1.5 tackles, 1.5 interceptions, and 2.9 balls recovered (stats from Sofascore).

So he certainly provided that ground coverage and added layer of defence in midfield and that’s something Sheffield Wednesday could really do with in the summer, especially with Will Vaulks currently out of contract.

Even if Vaulks stays though, he’ll be the only player capable of really playing that defensive midfielder role, so another similar type of player could be a real boost to Rohl’s squad.

Hayden would bring quality and experience to the ranks but whether or not he fancies another loan move remains to be seen, with the Owls unlikely to be able to afford a permanent swoop for the Newcastle United man.
