'As everyone says': Michael Smith claims one Sheffield Wednesday gem has something that is 'uncoachable'

Michael Smith has claimed that one Sheffield Wednesday gem has something that is really ‘uncoachable’.

Michael Smith found himself back amongst it in the final weeks of the campaign, having only started once in the previous five months.

The striker returned to the starting line-up against QPR then started the next three matches, scoring an important late equaliser in the 2-2 draw with Norwich City.

Smith was benched for the final three matches of the campaign, but did appear to have forced his way back into Danny Rohl’s plans ahead of another season in the Championship.

While perhaps not as prolific in the second tier, Smith’s experience and leadership can be very beneficial to the squad.

At 32 years old, Smith can become a mentor for the younger players and has already highlighted the talent of Bailey Cadamarteri.

The teenager was handed his opportunity in the first team by Rohl in November and went onto score three goals in his first five starts for the club.

Ike Ugbo’s arrival resulted in his place on the bench and he managed only 16 minutes of action in their final six outings.

However, Smith still believes Cadamarteri has a huge future and football and has claimed he has one ability that is ‘uncoachable’.

Bailey Cadamarteri tipped for a ‘very good career’

Speaking to The Yorkshire Post, the attacker said: “I’ve watched him walking into the ground and he’s not built like a 17 or 18-year-old and he’s filled out an awful lot and he has got a real chance in that sense as well.

“He can look after himself and he’s got ability and that knack of being in the right place at the right time, which – as everyone says – is uncoachable. You have either got it or you haven’t.

“He’s done really well and seems like a really level-headed lad and you can see he’s got the experience of his family to lean on as well as those in the dressing room. I am pretty sure he will have a very good career.”

Sheffield Wednesday should send the 18-year-old out on loan

Considering Bailey Cadamarteri only came into the senior team at the end of 2023, four goals in 14 starts really isn’t a bad return.

The striker could have been given a real chance to make a positive impact had Sheffield Wednesday been relegated, but action could remain limited in the second tier.

It’s yet to be seen whether the Owls will try to sign Ugbo permanently, but either way they are likely to at least sign one proven goalscorer to improve their chances next term.

While Cadamarteri is highly-rated at Hillsborough, he could see his development hindered if he struggles for game-time.

If the Owls do sign a couple of strikers then it could be a good idea to send him out on loan to League One, where he would undoubtedly smash it.

Cadamarteri could then return next summer a much more confident player, and could be ready to battle for a regular place in the starting line-up.
