'That's why': Sheffield Wednesday star makes hilarious dig at Rotherham United's form in 2023/24

Sheffield Wednesday striker Josh Windass has aimed a hilarious dig at Rotherham United following their relegation to League One.

For much of the season, it was Sheffield Wednesday who were at the foot of the Championship table.

Under Xisco Munoz, the Owls couldn’t buy a win. But under Danny Rohl they claimed 16 in all competitions and eventually finished the season in 20th place of the table, on 53 points and three points above the drop zone.

Rotherham meanwhile finished in last place on 27 points; 23 points adrift in the end with the Millers being the first team that Sheffield Wednesday beat in the 2023/24 season.

And following the Championship finale which saw the Owls complete their great escape under Rohl, with Windass on the scoresheet, the Wednesday striker has made a comical dig about the Millers’ form.

Josh Windass jokes about Rotherham United this season

Rotherham United won just five league games in 2023/24 and lost a further 29, subjecting them to relegation after a two-year stint in the Championship.

Sheffield Wednesday did the double over Rotherham, both games without conceding as well.

And speaking on the high points tally needed to stay in the Championship this season, Windass explained to the Official EFL Podcast that it was due to teams taking six points off of Rotherham throughout the campaign.

Windass joked: “That’s only because everyone took six points off Rotherham, that’s why. It’s usually only 42 or 43 but everyone beat them so they got 50.”

What next for Josh Windass at Sheffield Wednesday

Windass is one of the many out of contract this summer, and after his strong end to the season in which he scored in each of the final three games, Sheffield Wednesday have great reason to offer him a new deal.

And the most recent suggestions are that Wednesday and Windass are in talks over a new potential deal and so it looks like the striker will be staying for at least another year.

Rohl was reportedly keen on keeping him earlier in the campaign and Windass has since shown why he’s so highly thought of and so valuable at Championship level.

He came up with the goods at the right time for Sheffield Wednesday, with his antics and his recent documentary showing his down to earth side and his love for the Owls.

If Sheffield Wednesday can get a new deal for Windass then it’ll be a very positive first move in terms of the contracts, with plenty for Rohl and co to work through.
