A new sandwich cutting technique has gone viral, and it's weirdly satisfying

The internet is going crazy after a man shared a revolutionary new way of slicing a sandwich on Twitter/X.

People are calling the new cut life-changing, and we asked a nutrition expert why the slicing method is so satisfying.

New way of cutting a sandwich

It all started when a guy called Ryan Duff posted a picture of his ham and cheese toasted sandwich, which he had cut into not two or four, but three slices.

The revolutionary new technique uses three knife cuts to create one triangle and two strange trapezoids. It’s been nicknamed the ‘Y Cut’ as it makes the shape of the letter in the bread.

The post has racked up more than 19 million views and had everyone mesmerised, with one person commenting: “I cut my sandwich like this today and I’ll be honest you really did something here.”

“This is game-changing,” said another, while a third added: “You’ve changed lives today.”

“The three way sandwich cut is the future. Trust me here. Embrace the revolution,” the guy joked in response.

Why it feels more satisfying to eat

Nutrition expert Sarah Pelc Graca told The Focus that cutting a sandwich into thirds is more satisfying than halves or quarters for a few different reasons.

1. Looks like more food

“When a sandwich is cut into thirds, you’re left with more individual pieces, which can make it seem like there’s more food to enjoy overall,” she said.

While cutting into quarters would create more individual pieces, the slices would be smaller, so you could feel like you were eating less.

2. Bigger portions

On top of that, cutting the sandwich into smaller pieces can make each portion seem more substantial, tricking your brain into feeling like you’re eating more.

In reality, the amount of sandwich you have hasn’t changed, but it’s all about how you feel psychologically.

3. Feeling fuller

Eating smaller portions more frequently can also create a greater sense of satiety compared to consuming one large portion, she explained.

“Dividing the sandwich into thirds might lead to a feeling of fullness sooner, giving the impression that you enjoyed a larger meal.”

4. Longer meal time

Graca said that smaller pieces “encourage more bites”, which can prolong your meal, again making it feel like you’re consuming more food.

Cutting it into smaller slices makes the sandwich take longer to eat, which improves the mealtime experience.

5. Value to the eater

“Breaking the sandwich into thirds may create a perception of value for the eater,” the food expert continued.

This makes it feel like you are getting more for your money or effort in making the sandwich.

6. Sharing

Finally, cutting a sandwich into thirds can be ideal for sharing with others or serving at events where smaller portions are preferred.

The slightly larger pieces are also easier to pick up than quarters, which are fiddly and often result in the filling falling out.
