Danny Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday will be rubbing his hands amid Bayern Munich update - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl may well be rubbing his hands at this latest update from Bayern Munich.

Sheffield Wednesday are certainly in need of some new bodies during the upcoming summer transfer window.

The Owls have a lot on their plate right now with the future of Rohl still somewhat unclear, and the futures of several first-team players still unclear too.

Barry Bannan and Josh Windass are among those out of contract but reportedly in discussions, whilst Lee Gregory and George Byers’ summer exits have already been confirmed.

But Wednesday are being linked with potential new signings which suggests that the club are pressing on with their summer transfer plans.

And this emerging Bayern Munich update may well add to those transfer plans at Hillsborough.

Hansi Flick in talks over Bayern Munich return

Rohl’s former boss Hansi Flick is now reportedly in talks over a dramatic return to Bayern Munich this summer.

Rohl was formerly Flick’s no.2 at Munich before the pair moved to take charge of the German national team in 2021.

Flick has now been out of work since 2023, visiting Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday earlier this year where he watched the Owls beat Plymouth Argyle 1-0 in the Championship.

Both appear to have maintained contact and Rohl previously spoken of his close relationship with Flick, who could possibly entrust the development of some Bayern Munich youngster with Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday, should he take charge of the German giants this summer.

Could Sheffield Wednesday realistically sign Bayern Munich players on loan

Bayern Munich to Sheffield Wednesday would be a big change, especially in the here and now with the Owls still in something of a transition period.

The club is making a lot of positive changes off the pitch but they still have a tonne of rebuilding to do this summer as well as the future of Rohl to reaffirm.

But clubs often send their youngsters out on loan towards the end of the summer when they’ve organised their first-team.

So for Sheffield Wednesday, if they can ready themselves for the 2024/25 sooner rather than later, then they’ll be in a position where they can offer themselves to clubs like Bayern Munich, as a place for their younger players to come and gain some first-team experience.

Playing under Rohl has brought the best out of almost every player at Sheffield Wednesday this season, with youngsters like James Beadle, Di’Shon Bernard, Djeidi Gassama and more all prevailing.

So Rohl certainly seems to have that nouse with players, especially younger ones, and Flick will know exactly what his Bayern youngsters would be getting in terms of training and playing style if he sent them to play under Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday.

The pair may naturally be very similar in that sense and so for Bayern, allowing younger players to leave and get experience with Wednesday would be beneficial in terms of shaping them in the way that they want them to be shaped.

Of course, it hinges on Flick first heading to Bayern and then Sheffield Wednesday being in a position where they can realistically take some of the club’s younger players in for the next season, even if from their reserve team.

Whilst it may seem far-fetched on paper, it’s certainly not beyond the realms of possibility.
