Walmart is trialling drone deliveries in North Carolina.
The multinational retail corporation is launching a pilot program in Fayetteville this week, which will see "select grocery and household essential items" delivered via automated drones operated by Israeli startup Flytrex.
The unmanned aerial vehicle can reach speeds of up to 32 mph, travel 6.2 miles at a time, and, most importantly, can carry up to 6.6 pounds.
A video demonstration of the drone in action, sees it gradually bring the contents down to the ground from 80 feet in the air without landing.
The FAA approved the trial last year, and asked that the drones only fly on routes pre-planned, in daylight and in less populated areas.
Little else is known about the program.
Walmart's Senior Vice President, Tom Ward, said: "We know that it will be some time before we see millions of packages delivered via drone.That still feels like a bit of science fiction, but we're at a point where we're learning more and more about the technology that is available and how we can use it to make our customers' lives easier."
