YouTube begins roll out of TikTok rival YouTube Shorts

YouTube has started rolling out its TikTok competitor, YouTube Shorts.

The new short-form video creator has arrived in India, with an early beta launched, and comes on the day Donald Trump's Administration decides whether it will ban TikTok in the US.

Exactly like TikTok, users can create a 15-second clip set to music, which is available via an "in-product music picker feature".

A YouTube spokesperson told The Verge that the feature "currently has 100,000s of tracks, and we're working with music artists, labels and publishers to make more of their content available to continue expanding our catalog."

YouTube will display the Shorts on their homepage.

The video platform previously vowed that "we want to enable the next generation of mobile creators to also grow a community on YouTube with Shorts."

YouTube's CEO, Susan Wojcicki, previously said: "We actually have introduced stories on YouTube and we've actually seen our creators really engage with the stories.

"That would be an example of really short-form content. So we will definitely continue to innovate in all the different format sizes, including really short-form video."

In August, Instagram launched their own TikTok rival, Reels.

One big difference is that Reels doesn't have a two-tabbed, scrollable news feed in the same way TikTok does.
