Facebook has unveiled their AI machine learning translator for 100 languages

The social media network's software is capable of translating 100 languages without using English first.

The system, M2M-100, was tested using 7.5 billion sentence pairs from 100 different languages.

Facebook processes around 20 billion translations every day on the news feed and they hope their new AI model will improve content going forward.

Facebook's AI Research Assistant Angela Fan said in a blog post: "This milestone is a culmination of years of Facebook AI's foundational work in machine translation.

"When translating, say, Chinese to French, most English-centric multilingual models train on Chinese to English and English to French, because English training data is the most widely available.

"Our model directly trains on Chinese to French data to better preserve meaning. It outperforms English-centric systems by 10 points on the widely used BLEU metric for evaluating machine translations."
