Helen Hunt: Rainy Cast Away kiss was NOT romantic

Helen Hunt says her kiss with Tom Hanks in 'Cast Away' was far from romantic due to artificial rain.

The 58-year-old actress played Kelly Frears the one-time girlfriend of 64-year-old Hanks' alter ego Chuck Noland, who is stranded on an uninhabited island for several years before making his escape and getting back to America.

In the 2000 drama, the two characters are briefly reunited and share an intense kiss, but Helen admits it was not romantic to film as they were both drenched in falling water.

Appearing on 'The Kelly Clarkson Show', she revealed: "In order for rain to show up on film, it has to be droplets the size of coffee cups. Like, it has to be so much rain.

“So, we would have this huge romantic kiss. Cut. And then up the driveway, you’d just hear squish, squish, squish, squish, squish.”

On the show Helen also discussed some of her other past movies and admitted she initially turned down the role of Dr. Jo Harding in 'Twister' until Steven Spielberg personally asked her to star in the 1996 disaster flick.

She explained: “It seemed like probably the tornado is the star of this movie, and what good is the part gonna be?

"And then I got taken to a fancy lunch, where Steven Spielberg said, ‘Please do it,’ and I said, ‘OK!'"

Helen - who won the Best Actress Oscar for her performance as downtrodden waitress Carol Connelly in the 1997 romantic comedy 'As Good as It Gets' - recently admitted she took a step back from Hollywood for several years as she didn't want her life to be consumed by acting.

She said: "It was weird after winning the Emmy and Oscar all at once but I wanted to have a life. I got scared that I would be a lifer in the industry so I decided to step back from some projects.

"People ask, 'What happened?', and I go, 'I don't know I haven't stopped for one second.'"
