Warum?

Twenty years ago this week, the European Union saw the biggest enlargement round ever. On May 1st, 2004, ten states simultaneously joined the bloc, seven of them from beyond the former Iron Curtain. Some called it the “Big Bang”. In a rather mute celebration, the European institutions in Brussels, Strasbourg and Luxembourg were lit up for the occasion this week. EU Council President Charles Michel advocated new members: “Enlargement is vital for the future of the EU because without enlargement there is, in fact, a risk for a new Iron Curtain, and this would be extremely dangerous, if you would...

Putting aside all the controversy and security concerns, the Euronews Culture team have picked their hot favourites for glory. Theo Farrant’s top pick: Nemo – The Code (Switzerland)If I had to put my money on a Eurovision winner this year, it would be 'The Code' by Nemo, representing Switzerland. Why? Well, firstly, it's my favourite out of the bunch; an incredibly original and catchy song. Secondly, it's currently the bookies' number one darling. 'The Code' is pretty batshit. It mixes drum and ba...

Organisers of the Eurovision Song Contest said on Thursday they reserve the right to remove any Palestinian flags and pro-Palestinian symbols at the show next week in Sweden. The announcement came amid heightened tensions surrounding Israel’s participation in the annual music competition over its military campaign in Gaza. Pro-Palestinian groups are expected to stage large protests in Malmö to raise awareness of their cause. At least 34,596 people have been killed in the Palestinian territory during almost seven months of war between Israel and Hamas. The majority of whom are women and childre...

Israel’s representative for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest has been told not to leave her hotel room other than for performances and Eurovision official events because of pro-Palestinian protests. Eden Golan, 20, arrived in Malmö earlier this week amid intense security precautions, wearing a pin to show solidarity with the hostages still being held by Hamas. Swedish police are on high alert, and have even asked for reinforcements from Denmark and Norway for Europe’s biggest pop competition, which is turning out to be one of the event’s most controversial editions – mostly because of Israe...
