Orthodox Christians around the world marked Easter on Sunday. The religious holiday – celebrating Jesus Christ’s resurrection – was marked by vibrant festivities in European countries with significant Orthodox Christian populations, including Greece, Bulgaria, Romania and Ukraine. Eastern Orthodox Christians usually celebrate Easter later than Catholic and Protestant churches (who celebrated on 31 March this year), because they follow the ancient Julian calendar: a different method of calculating the date for the holy day that marks Christ’s resurrection. One of the most striking features of O...

On Saturday, worshippers including President Vladimir Putin attended Moscow’s landmark Christ the Savior Cathedral for a nighttime Easter service led by Patriarch Kirill, head of the Russian Orthodox Church. This unusual Easter-time ritual takes place in just 28 villages in Czechia's Pardubice Region. The eldest boy in each village dresses up in a straw suit and is marched in a procession through the village. The tradition is known as "Vodění Jidáše" and is loosely translated to "Marching Judas". Some say this ritual was first documented as early as 1893 although no one knows exactly where it came from. According to Euronews correspondent Jiri Skacel, the burning is related to magic and a religious understanding of nature. "It's a kind of springtime personal cleansing," he adds. The 87-year-old pontiff presided over Easter Sunday Mass in a flower-decked St. Peter’s Square and then delivered a heartfelt prayer for peace in his annual roundup of global crises. In between, he made several loops around the piazza in his popemobile, greeting well-wishers. “Peace is never made with weapons, but with outstretched hands and open hearts,” Francis said from the loggia overlooking the square, to applause from the wind-swept crowd below. Francis appea...

Pope Francis presided over the Vatican's sombre Easter Vigil service on Saturday night, delivering a 10-minute homily and baptizing eight people, a day after suddenly skipping the Good Friday procession at the Colosseum as a health precaution. Francis entered the darkened, silent St. Peter's Basilica in his wheelchair, took his place in a chair and offered an opening prayer. The evening service, one of the most solemn and important moments in the Catholic liturgical calendar, commemorates the resurrection of Jesus. The Vatican had said Francis skipped the Good Friday procession to ensure his p...

Britain's King Charles III joined the queen and other royal family members for an Easter service at Windsor Castle on Sunday. The monarch offered a cheery wave as he walked into St. George's Chapel for an hour-long service. Charles has continued fulfilling his state duties, such as reviewing government papers and meeting with the prime minister. But his attendance at...
