Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned against a repeat of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, as the country marked the anniversary of the 1986 disaster at the power plant. "Europe's largest nuclear power plant near Zaporizhzhya has already been in the hands of Russian terrorists for 785 days," the head of state wrote on Telegram on Friday. He urged the international community to exert pressure on Russia to bring the power plant back under Ukrainian control. "And that all nuclear objects in Ukraine are safe from Russian attacks," Zelensky wrote, adding that alone would save the world f...

The Russian management of the occupied Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhya has reported another incident involving a combat drone. Observers from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stationed on site were informed of an attempted drone attack on Thursday, according to an IAEA situation report. The observers also heard an explosion themselves, but they were not allowed to visit the site of the alleged incident afterwards, the report said. Last week, there were several drone attacks on the nuclear power plant near the front line. The plant was not seriously damaged. Moscow an...

New York (AFP) - Despite the recent cancellation of a next-generation US nuclear plant, backers of the carbon-free power source remain hopeful new projects will come on line by the end of the decade. Late last year, the US energy company NuScale announced it was pulling the plug on a small modular reactor (SMR) project in the western state of Idaho. The project -- the sole SMR design yet to be approved by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission -- faced exploding costs that took the estimated price from $5.3 billion up to $9.3 billion. The "collapse of NuScale's project should spell the end for s...

Korea’s “artificial sun” broke its own record during a plasma operation in which temperatures of 100 million degrees Celsius were supported for 48 seconds, a promising new step toward nuclear fusion. The Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research or KSTAR had previously set a record of reaching 100 million degree plasma for 30 seconds in 2021, the Korea Institute of Fusion Energy (KFE) said in a statement. Nuclear fusion happens when two light atoms’ nuclei merge to form a single heavier one, generating a huge release of energy. This phenomenon powers stars, including the sun, which is wh...

EU leaders from 11 member states backed a declaration in support of nuclear energy during a conference in Brussels today (March 21) aimed at attracting support from development banks to finance the deployment of new and maintenance of existing power plants. Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Finland, France, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Sweden were among signatories of the declaration, which called on regulators to “fully unlock” the potential of nuclear and to “enable financing conditions” to support the lifetime extension of existing nuclear reactors. “We call for greater in...
