On a narrow street lined with row houses and an auto body shop in the Kensington neighborhood of North Philadelphia, Marsella Elie climbs a home’s front steps and knocks hard on the door. A middle-aged man appears with a wary look on his face. “Hello, sir, how are you doing today?” asked Elie, wearing a royal-blue jacket embroidered with the city government’s Liberty Bell logo. “My name is Marsella. I’m working with the city. You heard about the overdoses that are going around in the neighborhood, right?” The man gives a cautious nod. Elie gestures to the pamphlets she’s holding about drug ove...

OCALA, Fla. — Fire Capt. Jesse Blaire steered his SUV through the mobile home park until he spotted the little beige house with white trim and radioed to let dispatchers know he’d arrived. There, Shawnice Slaughter waited on the steps, wiping sleep from her eyes. “Good morning, Shawnice,” Blaire said. “How are you feeling today?” “I’ve been good, I’ve been good,” Slaughter said. “Much better.” Three days earlier, Blaire — a paramedic who leads the fire department’s emergency medical team — met Slaughter at a nearby hospital. She had overdosed on opioids. It took four vials of an overdose rever...

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — From 2006 through 2014, more than 81 million painkiller pills were shipped to this city and surrounding rural Cabell County. The arrival of prescription opioids onto seemingly every block of Huntington, a city of about 46,000 people, augured the first wave of an overdose crisis. Heroin followed, then fentanyl. Residents remember Aug. 15, 2016, as the darkest day because on that afternoon and evening, 28 people overdosed in the city. But Huntington had shouldered collective trauma before. On Nov. 14, 1970, Southern Airways Flight 932 crashed into a hillside just outside Hunt...

The United States is knee-deep in what some experts call the opioid epidemic’s “fourth wave,” which is not only placing drug users at greater risk but is also complicating efforts to address the nation’s drug problem. These waves, according to a report out today from Millennium Health, began with the crisis in prescription opioid use, followed by a significant jump in heroin use, then an increase in the use of synthetic opioids like fentanyl. The latest wave involves using multiple substances at the same time, combining fentanyl mainly with either methamphetamine or cocaine, the report found. ...

New York (AFP) - Publicis Health will pay $350 million to settle charges from US states that its "predatory and deceptive marketing strategies" worsened the opioid epidemic, New York's top prosecutor said Thursday. Publicis Health, part of the French advertising giant Publicis, worked with Purdue Pharma between 2010 and 2019 on marketing material to promote OxyContin and other drugs, New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a press release. She said the agreement was the first with an advertising agency for its role in the opioid epidemic. "For a decade, Publicis helped opioid manufac...

An executive at Teva Pharmaceuticals flagged Publix Super Markets in October 2015 after detecting what he called in an email “serious red flags” with the grocery chain’s orders of powerful opioids. The share of high-strength oxycodone orders was well above normal for a chain of grocery store pharmacies, and the total number of pills sent to Publix stores was “significantly above their peers,” Teva’s head of federal compliance wrote in the email to his supervisors, according to court records in a federal lawsuit pending in Ohio against Publix and other companies. “This is high-strength oxycodon...

Washington (AFP) - The US drug regulator announced Wednesday that Narcan, the treatment which reverses overdoses, can be distributed without prescription, a move that comes as the country battles an acute opioid addiction crisis. The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) said that four milligram nasal spray doses of naloxone hydrochloride, the generic name for Narcan, can be sold over the counter almost anywhere, from pharmacies to supermarkets to gas stations. The FDA said they moved to address to mounting toll from opioid use, especially the synthetic and relatively easily made fentanyl, which h...

Washington (AFP) - When a person suffers an opioid overdose, their respiration is "slowed to the point that you're not breathing," social worker Johnny Bailey explains, speaking to a rapt audience at a nonprofit office in Washington earlier this month. Bailey is training attendees in the use of Narcan, a drug that reverses overdoses caused by opioids such as fentanyl, a narcotic 50 times more powerful than heroin. Narcan will "bring someone back from basically the dead," the 47-year-old recovered drug addict said at the offices of HIPS, an organization that provides "harm reduction" services t...
