Portugal is the world’s leading producer of cork. In 2023, cork exports achieved a record value of €1.2 billion, 75 percent of which came from cork stoppers, according to APCOR, the Portuguese association of cork producers. The Amorim Group, Portugal's leading cork company, claims that around one out of three wine bottles worldwide is sealed with a cork stopper made in Portugal. About 20 years ago, significant concerns emerged that cork might lose market share to synthetic alternatives, which were less expensive and carried no risk of spoiling the wine with 'cork taint'. Sérgio Godinho's career is just a few years older than democracy in Portugal. In 1974, the year of the revolution, he released his third studio album, 'À queima-roupa' (At Point Blank Range). The singer of the resistance was living in exile in Canada and had left behind two albums recorded during the dictatorship, the first of which, "Os sobreviventes" (recorded in 1971 and released the following year), was banned by the regime, followed by "Pré-histórias" (1972). Godinho notes the interesting coincidence between the names of the albums and the situation in Portugal: "The name 'Os sobrevivente...

When Paula Motta discovered medical cannabis in 2017, it was still illegal in Portugal. Motta decided to give her daughter drops of cannabis extract, and over time, the girl’s crises became less frequent. The teenager continues to take two pills along with two drops of cannabis - one in the morning and one in the evening - and episodes only occur “every fifteen days, for about two minutes”. “Medical cannabi...
