E-gates at airports across the UK have returned to normal following a mass outage which caused disruption and huge queues for thousands of passengers. On Tuesday, the electronic gates Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Manchester and Bristol airports stopped working, delaying passengers who were trying to cross the UK border. The British Home Office has ruled out a cyberattack as the cause. They say the widespread delays were down to a nationwide technical outage. "As soon as engineers detected a wider system network issue at 19:44 pm last night, a large-scale contingency resp...

The UK government is preparing for chaos ahead of the launch of the EU’s Entry-Exit system (EES). The incoming EU border scheme, set to be in place from 6 October, is expected to cause delays at the Port of Dover, south east England. Guy Opperman, a minister in the UK’s transport department, has now explained the scheme will have a “six-month soft launch” to make the process more simple. Speaking at the House of Commons’ European Scrutiny Committee, Opperman said the plan will enable a “greater freedom of passage of vehicles” if queues build due to the EES. The scheme will see travellers from ...

The “Light in Life” exhibition will take place on the 132-hectare site and will be open from May 4 to September 29. The sculptures, made mostly of stainless steel, are spread across vegetation’s Kew to reflect the greenery of the site. Quinn says: ’Kew approached me to do something and I came down, and I hadn't been for a long time. And when I came here and realised that they have hundreds of scientists doing research and horticulturists and I spent more and more time here, I realised that there was a whole show to do here, so we worked together to do that.’ The exhibition aims to attract more...

The Isles of Scilly are 140 islands, 28 miles off the Cornish coast. Five islands are inhabited with a population of just over 2,000 people, the southernmost settled one being St. Agnes. Due to their position at the end of the North Atlantic Drift, they are bathed by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream and can often feel sub-tropical. They don't generally experience the hot and cold temperature swings of the rest of the UK. Instead, with their exquisite blue seas, green landscapes and sparkling white beaches, the Isles of Scilly feel more Mediterranean, although perhaps not as warm as Cornwall....

The Irish government has said it is planning to enact legislation by the end of May that would allow it to resume sending asylum seekers who arrive over the border with Northern Ireland back to the United Kingdom. Justice Minister Helen McEntee said the emergency legislation would allow for faster processing of migrants. “This has never been a panacea when we talk about returns, the most effective way that we can have an immigration system that's firm but fair is a fast processing system and what this means is that people's applications are turned around much more quickly,” she said. Ireland’s...

British and Irish ministers are trying to ease tensions between their governments as London refuses to accept the return of asylum seekers arriving in Ireland – many of whom are apparently fleeing Britain for fear of deportation to Rwanda. The British government recently passed a highly controversial law under which asylum seekers and others arriving in the UK by illicit means, such as small boats crossing the English channel, will be deported to Rwanda to have their cases processed. Today, Irish officials are expected to discuss emergency legislation for a new policy to “return” the migrants ...
